It seems Nigeria and Ethiopia are also active on their part of the project. Here the page from Nigeria:

The Great Green Wall is not only afforestation and reforestation initiative or establishment of a Green Wall of trees from Senegal to Djibouti, but a framework of action for rural development. The specific goal of the Initiative is to address land degradation and desertification in the Sahel and Sahara region, enhance food security, and support communities to adapt to climate change. The Initiative is expected to lead to the sustainable management of land, water and vegetation on up to 2 million hectares of croplands, rangelands and dryland forest ecosystem per country, protection of threatened dryland biodiversity, and the sequestering of 0.5 to 3.1 million tons of carbon per year. In addition the initiative has many other merits, such as the capitalization of best practices and integration in national priorities as well as fostering synergies and sub-regional coordination, which could be replicated in other regions affected by desertification, land degradation and drought. In order to ensure the success of the GGW Initiative, local community participation and ownership are central to the planning, implementation and management of most projects that support its objectives.

Ethiopia getting started is a good news, as we see on the map in one of my previous post, they need more food in these regions.

This method could be used in Central Asia also, as it is a rather dry environment. South Asia on the other hand is both dry and overpopulated. The Great Green Wall method couldn't hurt, but it may not be sufficient.

Even if it isn't sufficient, I would imagine that it is better than nothing.

They are indeed doing something like this in the central parts of China. The effectiveness of this programme is controversial though. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-North_Shelter_Forest_Program

It wouldn't be much in the case of Bangladesh, they don't have much unused land sparsely populated, which only need some more water and trees. They have plenty of people and water already. Dutch like dike to gain land over sea would be more useful, and farm in high rise building. They call it vertical farming.

The Chinese project is older than the African one, the later took note of what didn't work there. The African project focus on local population managing the trees and gardens for their own profit. The trees are chosen among those native of the region, with an obvious money maker value, to make them more valuable alive than dead. Plus, from the 1970s to the 2010s a lot more research on the potential natural vegetation was made, so they don't just plant the cheapest fast growing trees regardless of the locals, like they did in the 1970s in China and Algeria, but plants indigenous trees well adapted to the climate,  which villagers will find more valuable than plain savanna.

In this regard, the Chinese project would an upgrade using the current knowledge of the field. They had started to improve their project already with micro project within the Great Green Wall.
