Paranormal Gal Posted March 14, 2017 #1 Share Posted March 14, 2017 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wendigo In Algonquian folklore, the wendigo or windigo is a cannibal monster or evil spirit native to the northern forests of the Atlantic Coast and Great Lakes Region of both the United States and Canada.[1] The wendigo may appear as a monster with some characteristics of a human, or as a spirit who has possessed a human being and made them become monstrous. It is historically associated with cannibalism, murder, insatiable greed, and the cultural taboos against such behaviours.[2] The legend lends its name to the disputed modern medical term Wendigo psychosis, which is considered by psychiatrists to be a form of culture-bound syndrome with symptoms such as an intense craving for human flesh and a fear of becoming a cannibal.[3] In some Indigenous communities, environmental destruction and insatiable greed are also seen as a manifestation of Wendigo Psychosis.[4]

Paranormal Gal Posted March 14, 2017 Author #3 Share Posted March 14, 2017 Lol you beat me to the question i got busy and had to get off. Do you think it is real? Having some native american in me some of there stories are interesting. I seen on monsters in american a few stories about it. Could there be a chance it could be true? And how can you explain people one minute fine next minute turn into a crazy man eater?
Totah Dine Posted March 18, 2017 #4 Share Posted March 18, 2017 Personally I feel the Wendigo is an allegory for the dangers of losing your moral compass. In Navajo folktales people with an overabundance of greed, selfishness and sloth are prone to following the path of the Skinwalker. I attend the Gathering of Nations each year in Albuquerque and usually there are 49'rs after the main event. We do a lot of mingling and conversing. What I heard around the campfires confirmed my suspicions. But I can only go by what I've heard and anecdotal evidence is no evidence.
taniwha Posted March 18, 2017 #5 Share Posted March 18, 2017 (edited) Interesting how my maori ancestors would cannibalize each other in battle. I know of no other time cannibalism was used but for battle. It was probably deeply ritualistic though. Maori were fairly superstitious people. It was considered the ultimate insult to perform on the enemy. Whoever consumed you would gain supernatural power from your life force. It could perhaps be seen as a compliment to be eaten even though that's no consolation prize. The best people to eat were therefore of high status. Sometimes earth ovens would be prepared around an enemy village days before a siege. Warriors would perform war dances, taunting insults, The feast imminent, smoke from the fires rising with the dawn. I imagine it would take a huge amount of strength just to overcome the fear and dread of such psychological warfare. There is a place in NZ called Kaitangata. Literally it means " To feast on the flesh of man " Names are not given lightly. Sometimes myth is rooted in fact. GlitterRose Posted March 18, 2017 #6 Share Posted March 18, 2017 I remember the dark comedy Ravenous in the late 90s. It had overtones of the Wendigo legend. I'd have to agree that it seems as if it's an allegory. That said, there's much to say about greed corrupting people. If you look around at what's happening in the world, it isn't any less horrific and catastrophic.

Future ghost Posted March 19, 2017 #10 Share Posted March 19, 2017 It doesn't really sound like a bigfoot based on its description. Seems like a totally different thing.
Scholar4Truth Posted June 21, 2017 #11 Share Posted June 21, 2017 I remember the Pet Semetary movies had hints of the Wendigo within it because when a person comes back from the dead they are overtaken by the entity and become similar to deadites, if you seen the Evil Dead series then you can see what I mean, I also read this entity actually drags people up into the air then drops them and kills them. From pictures I seen it looks like a half deer/half humanoid creature.
