HOW IT WORKS: Instead of a needle, an optical sensor reads the wood's color and texture. Then, algorithms convert those variations into notes on a scale, which is mapped to a piano synthesizer and played.

I've always wondered about that since I was a kid playing with a neighbor's vinyls ... getting the right AI algorithms and a bit of sound engineering might give us all the first Nature Composed Symphonic Piece in history ...

that's way above and beyond 'kewl'
