UM-Bot Posted March 29, 2017 #1 Share Posted March 29, 2017 The bizarre plan would see the world's tallest building being hung upside-down from an orbiting asteroid. http://www.unexplained-mysteries.com/news/305871/firm-plans-to-build-upside-down-skyscraper
ExoPaul Posted March 29, 2017 #2 Share Posted March 29, 2017 How can it be the "biggest in the world" if none of the skyscraper is actually touching any part of the world?

Dunno. They should just build a rectangular skyscraper upside down. That's an easy way to make a world record.

Silent Trinity Posted March 29, 2017 #5 Share Posted March 29, 2017 (edited) At best this is theoretical architecture, more likely a mixture of boredom and way too much Redbull lol. Lunacy to say the least. And why is this categorized under Science & Technology? Surely it should be under Bizarre News? MJNYC Posted March 29, 2017 #7 Share Posted March 29, 2017 Let's say, just for fun, it got built. Who would want to work there? Then again, I'll bet there would be a few. I would NOT be included in that group.

Uber Doubter Posted March 29, 2017 #13 Share Posted March 29, 2017 (edited) Where are they supposed to get an asteroid? Asteroids "R" Us? And that's just the first, minor inconvenience in this whole scheme. It's quite depressing that people suggesting things like this, often have paychecks as huge as their ideas are stupid. MWoo7 Posted March 29, 2017 #15 Share Posted March 29, 2017 (edited) Oh, ... thought this was the shrooms thread. They could start by at least getting one nanocarbon cable DONE and hanging down for a few years for tests etc. maybe it would be cut all the time by debris/junk/rubbage who knows. Then two or three as safety backup when one is nicked by all the flying GARBAGE up there. Fire up their lasers for the elevator WAHLAH! now in the next few decades they'll have it done easy peezy captian cheesie ! YEY! +DanL Posted March 29, 2017 #16 Share Posted March 29, 2017 (edited) This is a version of the "Bean Stalk" space elevator to get from the ground to geosynchronous orbit without using rocket power. It will work...as soon as we invent a cable that will support 22,000+ miles of its own weight plus a little bit. You place a satellite or asteroid into geosynchronous orbit then just lower the cable and pull up another. It would work a lot like the building of the Golden Gate Bridge only on a MUCH larger scale. One thing that you need to think of is that this company may in the future basically "OWN" the idea just like Arthur C. Clark received payments on geosynchronous satellites after writing about them in a science fiction book and claiming the idea. Today's science fiction has a way of rapidly becoming tomorrows reality. I am 64 years old and remember when Dick Tracy was using a "radio phone". Buck Rogers was shooting "lazer" guns. Computers and talking robots were quite the rage in fiction. Electric cars were just a dream. Clothes were silk, wool or cotton and shoes were leather. Look about you and realize, just a very few tears ago there was no such thing as plastic, polyester or nylon. Some Kids got polio, I went to school with them and their legs were in steel braces and the halls in the elementry school I went to all had grab rails for them. All kids got 2 kinds of measles, chicken pox, mumps and whooping cough. Parent would take you to "visit" when one of your friends had one of these that you hadn't had yet! It had always been this way and the idea that this would pass was beyond science fiction. While this may sound wild today you may well live to see it or something very similar come to pass. Previous, old hats on the peg no absolutely nothing to do if you mentioned age which I recall was there- somewhere, would have said the same to snotnose in college classes that bring up sprouting insights from almighty brains of unbelievable ignorance or special kids club ideas, tell us something we don't already know stuff, which HA!
