Cambodia Appeals to Trump

Refugees heading to Phnom Penh in 1975. The United States lent Cambodia’s anti-Communist regime $274 million in the early 1970s to feed and clothe the starving population. Officials in Cambodia have long refused to pay the debt, which has grown to more than half a billion dollars.

Interest makes it a Billion dollars now?

They must be using the IRS to calculate that one...

In the old days, we would write it off in exchange for land to put a military base on, build it up and then leave them a fist class installation a few decades later. Even if it would make sense (it would be our only base between Guan and Diego Garcia) I don't think anyone thinks it would be a good idea today.

How about some sort of economic deal?

Nah, maybe not. No matter how well it works out for Cambodia, some mouth-breathing marxists would start whining about 'exploitation' while cashing their stipend checks, and that would be the end of that.

Guess things just have to stay as crappy as ever.
