Am I the only one who'd welcome an alien invasion? Doesn't even matter what kind of alien either.

As long as they are really alien aliens, none of that green human with antennae stuff.

the only way aliens could be hear is if they had identity as voices that humans experience but were of there super advanced cultures.  https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?topic=70362.0     Our animal understanding of voices is what people generally hear who hear voices. I still think they are the dead trying to shape your mind so later you don't bring up the wrong thing at the bar and you'll knock some chick up and they can be re-born again.

if they are an advanced lifeform they won't want us to progress prematurely because of their involvement. if they are humans from the future maybe they are from so far forward they don't know their past and they come back to find out like an ancient earth museum. if they are just secret government projects, maybe it's with good intention, especially with the rise of tensions in the world at the moment. maybe we are ready to meet E.T., but they simply don't want to meet due to their own nationalistic pride. maybe the governments have been working with aliens in secret because they know people would freak out, as a mass we won't be able to act casual if E.T.s start buying from our stores and working in our industries, we can't even accept other human beings right now, i don't think E.T. would want anything to do with us. i personally would love to meet E.T., i think it would be an informative and interesting experience, whether E.T. have good intentions or not. i've always wondered what the E.T. dating scene is like, maybe they look and act like us, maybe not, what if they have tentacles and communicate in retrowave, or maybe they are silicon-based and communicate in vibrations.

This may be one scenario,

When the ships landed, many panicked, of course. some rejoiced in eager anticipation. The creatures that emerged were squids, totally un-human. We were either repelled in horror or fascinated in curiosity at their alien form.

They remained close to their vessels and attempted no communication; they made no attempt to associate with us or even acknowledge our existence. They just wandered about awkwardly on their many tentacles, testing the air and the texture of the ground, it seemed.

When some officials cautiously approached, the creatures watched absently, paying little attention.

We all saw this remarkable scene unfold in wonder. The whole world, all of humanity, were glued to their television screens. Out of my windows, no vehicles appeared on the busy highway. The planet revolved in silence for the first time in its long history.

Excited commentators and well-known scientists babbled on in speculation, the religious had their say, politicians and generals speculated, but none of these mattered to us. They were here at last, and no talk or futile prattle could distract us from the captivating scene before our eyes.

They were only here for about an hour, then the greasy, tentacled creatures gathered together, re-entered their ships, and rose up, up into the clear blue skies and were gone.

We presumed our Earth was not what they had been looking for in their long voyages among the stars. Our planet was not suitable. Whether their departure was for the good of humankind or a great disappointment was open to conjecture.

Perhaps they were continuing their search for something we could never know. Perhaps as forlorn and lost orphans, searching the heavens in hope of a new home, or maybe only for the reassurance of finding some kindred life they could call their own and at last rejoice in brotherhood.

Some celebrated when they left, but I think many felt a sense of loss when they departed without a word spoken to us. We were alone once again in this vast universe. And yet, these mysterious creatures still lived out there somewhere, still searching for some consolation. This was a comforting thought for many, even though we did not think they would ever return.

We wondered if they, too, were comforted in their new knowledge of us.

What if other species are so utterly alien that they do not communicate on frequencies that humans can pick up? And that's why we haven't heard any communications. For all we know the closest species to us communicate with each other via olfactory (scent) or visual stimuli and thus do not have a need for radio communications.

I personally think that life is a fairly common occurrence all over the universe. Based on what we see on Earth life seems to find a way in any even almost impossible environment to exist. If you have a lot of life then I suspect intelligent life is going to appear on many of those places. With that said, I still feel that it is pretty unlikely for us to make contact with others any time in the near future.

The problem is that for us to detect or be detected three very unlikely things have to happen in a relatively tiny window of opportunity. Planetary eco systems are extremity fragile and the universe is an extremely violent and dangerous place.

As we look into the past on our planet we find mass extinctions seem to happen at terrifying and regular intervals. In general it seems to take about 75 million years to start from small life and grow to larger more successful and hopefully intelligent lifeforms. Unfortunately we seem to get blasted by some sort of world wide disaster slightly more often than that and things have to start all over at a lower level.

I won't bother to list all of the many possible natural disasters that would pretty much wipe out our civilization and possibly even our species. We all know about them and that doesn't even include the man made disasters that pop up when we reach this level of military and industrial capability. I think it is sort of a universal IQ test. We evolve, learn about the many problems that arise when we are limited to existing totally on one small planet and from that point the race is on. Will we be smart enough to work together to get off this one world before disaster strikes or will we just sit here and perish when eventually something gets us.

I suspect that this has been played out millions of times across the universe. Now back to the problem of detecting other intelligent life forms. In order for us to be detected by another at least equally capable life form they will have to be listening during the time period that we are making noise. So far that is barly a hundred years for us. That means that even if there were listeners that were only 105 light years away they wouldn't have gotten out signal yet. If we last say another hundred years and then get nailed by something that ends our signals we will have a signal length of only 200 light years. If a civilization rises up 300 years from how anywhere within 200 light years they will have missed us totally.

In order for contact to happen two civilizations have to be at a certain level at close to the same time in a certain sized sphere of several hundred light years and looking in the right frequency. They may get wiped out before our signal gets to them or we may stop signaling before they are listening. It is a little like having two bullets fired on a battle field having a head on collision and welding themselves together. This can and has happened but there have been an awful lot of bullets fired.

When you look at the distances involved and then understand that life could have been popping up and dying out for 10 billion years the numbers for the lucky matching up of two civilizations gets pretty daunting. Now, if we can avoid extinction for long enough and improve our ability to listen for faint signals so we can scan a larger sized sphere we will most likely EVENTUALLY hear something. The sad thing is that by the time we hear them they will most likely be gone. A signal from a sun 40,000 light years away was sent out 40,000 years ago. Lots of bad things can happen in that length of time and to get to that level they have probably been dodging the bullet for 70 million years and like us are past due.

About the only ones we will find will be the ones that have passed the universal IQ test and probably be waiting to see what we do before they get very excited. Even with above light speed travel they would have probably had a lot of disappointments. Signals received but the senders were dead before they got the message. They may even be watching us. If we can't get our stuff together and work together to get off this time bomb they might feel that we are not neighbors that they want to roll the welcome mat out for.

It is reasonable to surmise that technological advancement makes a species more able to survive whatever challenges it faces. For example-- given a few decades, or a century, we may be able to both detect and render harmless an asteroid that is otherwise going to strike Earth, and destroy us.

A species much more advanced than that might be able to prevent the end-of-life changes in their star that would otherwise render their planet uninhabitable. It's called stellar engineering.

At some point a practical means of traveling to the stars might well be devised. This would enable a species to move out of harms way, when a supernova occurred in their stellar neighborhood.

It seems  then, that the longer an intelligent species lives and advances, the more likely it is to continue to do so.

But little did we know, they left their offspring, and although at first they were nothing more than a curiosity, a plaything for the wealthy, we soon learned of their real intentions.. to suck the brains out of every last damned one of us!
