What's so wrong with a one world government?

How on Earth can a centralised government, used to short distances and things like regular climates and ready availability of this and that handle the fact that it might not be true of some other places, specially on the other side of the world. To put it in an American context, the policies that work for Maine are not all going to work for Nevada.

Even in England, those in London carry on as if the rest of the country doesn't exist and you can drive from one end to the other in a day.

Also, who are the sort who'd be in charge? Likely those who already are part of the 'ruling class' who've grown up in posh suburbs, gone to elite schools. And because they attend conferences all over the world, they consider themselves 'well travelled'. But do they have the faintest clue what life is like for most people outside their comfy social circles? They (the ones I've met, at least) think they do based on five minute chats with a cab driver or bartender wherever they go. Even well-meaning people can wreak havoc if they don't really know what they're doing yet think they do. Road to hell paved with good intentions and all that.
