ive experienced this, one loud thunder boom during a storm, not a rumble, instead a short boom. it was the only thunder during the entire storm.

Thunder 'rumbles' because it's generated all along the path of the lightning bolt, and the sound reaches you from more-or-less distant parts of the path spread out over time. If the path's square on to your position, it can all arrive at the same time with a considerable thump.

I was looking out a window when a bolt hit a tree about 20 ft away. It's the loudest sound I've ever heard.

I saw a tree hit around 100 feet from where I was standing. For a second I was living life inside of a light bulb. Simply amazing.
