Breatharian couple live a 'food-free' life

Still Waters

Recommended Posts

Studies have shown the health benefits of brief periods of intermittent fasting, but one couple has gone one step further and claim they live a “food-free” life.

Camila Castello, 34, and Akahi Ricardo, 36, are what is known as “Breatharians” - they eat just three times a week, and only ever a piece of fruit or some vegetable broth at a time.

The couple, who live between California and Ecuador, claim they have forgotten what it feels like to be hungry, and Castello says she only ate five times throughout her first pregnancy.

Thank you for that. I was just looking for such an article as I recalled reading about deaths in relation to Breatharianism

I wish the statements from the NHS in the article Still Waters posted were significantly more powerful and informative because, as the women from Sweden proves, there are people out there who fall for this nonsense.

Delusional!

This link has specific recent references to this stupid couple, and some other good debunking info relating to others too: http://www.snopes.com/breatharians/

I worry for their poor child, and anyone that believes anything they say. Really, if they believe the crap they're spouting, their child should be taken from them ASAP.

Edit: The Snopes page does mention multiple deaths.

And this cherry: 'It’s possible the couple profiled by The Sun in June 2017 both genuinely made and believed their own claims, but we found no proof the impossible assertion was actually true. When tested, purported breatharians such as Jasmuheen failed to last more than a few days without food and water.'

Edit 2: Here are the three articles from Snopes where people died believing this:

Scotland: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/scotland/453661.stm

Australia: http://www.caic.org.au/miscult/breatharians/uest for inner peace led Lani to a cruel death.htm

I like to compare the story of breatharianism to that of conscious control of the immune system. This is what we have so far:

The story of Tummo yoga:

1982: http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v295/n5846/abs/295234a0.html
1990: http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/08964289.1990.9934596

2015: The Wim Hof Method - Extraordinary in Everyone DVD set can be downloaded for free by anyone.
2017: People still catching colds. :D

The story of breatharianism:

1997: Jasmuheen publishes her book: Pranic Nourishment: Living on Light
2004: Prahlad Jani investigated in India
2006: Micheal Werner investigated in Austria - results withheld despite promise
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sc3X2S4a8I
2008: No Way To Heaven is released
2010: In the Beginning there Was Light is released
same year: Jani investigated (again)
2013: Thousands of breatharians in Germany alone, TV shows running on the subject nationwide
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EejvC745_QA
2017: People still wasting their hard-earned cash on foods and drinks filled with chemicals causing diseases.

Ain't that hilarious?

2017: Rolci still clutching at straws.

No amount of unrelated studies can make the breatharian hoax credible.

When you are totally wasted out of your mind from psychedelics etc. you forget that you just binge ate about 5k calories. This is what I believe is happening here. They only remember eating 3x a week because they are high the rest of the time.

  Thanks, Noxasa.   Welcome to UM.

People will believe anything, if you make it look and sound official.  I notice she said, they only eat a social events.  I bet they sneaking around and hit McDonald's on  the way home from the interview.

“I didn’t feel the need or desire to eat solid food during the entire nine months and so I only ate five times, all of which were in social situations,” she said.

errh, i just wanted to make sure that this little bit wasn't missed.

sounds like they ARE consuming something, and can some how get away with saying "i don't eat."...

I am a Pizzarian.

I hope to extend my life by cutting out the gaps between junk-food meals.

the only scientific test to be done on this couple is to send them to a hard working farm where the farmers will investigate their work and watch the food and water they consume.

Much research has been done under scientific conditions...you can achieve this by eating 8 days a week,  5 times a day.......9 times a day if you want to live to over 102.

Obviously, I'm a Pizz-arian, but I am wondering how to pronounce the subject matter.
Is it Breath-arian or Breathe-arian?  I've never heard it before.

What an absolute bunch of crap. They are most definitely consuming calories of some sort or they would be dead, or at the very least skin and bones. They seem to choose their words carefully, such as "eat", and " solid food ". They never mentioned drinking, so on the days they aren't consuming fruit they are probably drinking meal replacement shakes and smoothies. How incredibly irresponsible of these people to try and make others believe they're living off of air. What a couple of idiots.

Not to mention the countless possibilities of illness due to lack of food consumption- as a young kid I used to go larger than average periods without eating because it was convenient, later on I found out I had multiple stomach illnesses and gastric digestion problems that all stemmed back to my weird eating style- if they really go that long without eating or consuming amounts that were REALLY as small as they said, they would have some sort of stomach disorder by now, or some other disorder that stems from lack of nutrient (malnourished, anemia, different system minerals lacking in the system). Not to mention once you start having one problem with the digestive system and lack of minerals being consumed your body will slowly start to get sicker and sicker, and everything would have a chain reaction. I guess it's easy to lie about this stuff when you've never actually had to deal or research any of the consequences or medical outcomes of this kind of thing.

What a bunch of nonsense. It says in the article summary that it is controversial when in fact it is not controversial at all, any scientist you would ask would say that it is just crap, there would be no controversy about that.

This couple claimed to live 3 years without eating anything, i.e. being breatharians (which they are not now since they eat 3 times a week!).  Words are easy - where is the evidence for this?  Surely there would be someone in the media keen to film this sometime during the 3 years, i.e. it couldn't be kept a secret could it?   Like everyone else here it smacks of a hoax/lie.

I have done many fasts and detoxes and can vouch for its benefits.  However....to NEVER eat???  Come on!!

What a couple of hypocrites.

"I don't eat food" except three times a week. That is like me saying "I don't sleep" except every night.
