Islamic State militants have blown up the Grand al-Nuri Mosque of Mosul and its famous leaning minaret, an Iraqi military statement said, as Iraqi forces seeking to expel the group from the city closed in on the site.

It was from this medieval mosque three years ago that the militants’ leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared a self-styled “caliphate” spanning parts of Syria and Iraq.

Islamic State’s Amaq news agency accused American aircraft of destroying the mosque, a claim swiftly denied by the US-led international coalition fighting the hardline Sunni group.

“We did not strike in that area,” coalition spokesman US Air Force Colonel John Dorrian said.

“The responsibility of this devastation is laid firmly at the doorstep of ISIS,” said a statement from the commander of the coalition’s ground component, US Army Major General Joseph Martin, using an acronym for Islamic State.

This was the one with the famous leaning minaret, for those who are familiar with the region

The problem is I know why they are doing it. Isis want`s to start from scratch and rebuild Islam.  Ok maybe that`s just opinion but why do it.

In June 2014, Isis captured the city and killed the Imam of the mosque when he refused to join them.

In July 2014, Isis leader Baghdadi accepted his role as "commander of the faithful" and dressed himself in the garb of the tribe of the prophet Mohammed to give the Friday sermon inside the mosque, indicating it as their center of gravity, so to speak.

With Iraqi forces now ready to recapture the mosque, Isis destroyed it rather than let it be captured and used by anyone other than themselves.

Mass, mob narcissism.

By blowing up this historic mosque, these Islamic psychopaths are signalling that the war will go on even if they are militarily defeated.

...well its not just destroying a historic building but stoping the soon to be victorious forces from using the same building to announce the destruction of the IS death cult. I think the savagery will continue.

I googled the mosque and the minaret certainly is wonky. Or rather was.
