When It Comes to Conservation, Are Ugly Animals a Lost Cause?

The Earth is home to millions of species, but you wouldn’t know it from the media’s obsession with only a few dozen animals like tigers and gorillas. This narrow focus makes the most of popular fascination with large and cute creatures. Conservationists take advantage of these nonhuman celebrities to raise awareness about important issues and to seek donations to help save endangered animals. Given the multi-billion-dollar funding shortfall for nature conservation, public support is crucial.

Isaw an example of how shallow most of us are in this regard just the other day.  A beautiful Border Collie mix was running loose in a store parking lot and had several people working to find its owner.  It occurred to me that had the dog been some mutt, collar or not, it would probably have gotten almost no attention.  Sad...

We'd have more hominid variety if we didn't discriminate by looks so much

Have to prioritize somehow. Can't save every creature, unfortunately.

We need to focus on helping as many animals and our environment as we can...ugly or not, everything has a reason a niche here. If only we all focused on our Earth and caring about it/it's inhabitants, instead of money/power/ourselves, this world would be such a beautiful place. Sadly, that doesn't seem like it's in the books.

So you really didn't see an example of it?

But you may be right.   However, there are other factors that would play into it:

A well groomed/brushed border collie is rarely a street dog.

An unclean mutt could be vicious.

Many people have not had contact with a nice border collie and it can a cool opportunity.

I don't think the attraction to cosmetically pleasing animals will ever end.
