U.S. Republicans left scrambling after health

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican U.S. lawmakers on Tuesday were left scrambling to salvage their years-long campaign promise to repeal and replace Obamacare after their latest plan sank in the Senate, rattling financial markets and sending the U.S. dollar to a 10-month low.

The setback leaves the party to weigh a repeal-only strategy to buy more time for a possible replacement plan later as President Donald Trump vowed to return with a new proposal.

"As I have always said, let ObamaCare fail and then come together and do a great healthcare plan. Stay tuned!" he tweeted, blaming Democrats and a few members of his own party.

I'm still not sure what they were trying to accomplish.

They didn't have enough votes for any substantial changes, and any minor changes they could make would just taint them with the mess that is the ACA.  I would have just been satisfied with them just removing the mandate thus forcing those who are trying to stop them to help in revamping the whole thing or be blamed for a collapse of the medical insurance system.

I think they knew from the beginning that they didn't have enough Republicans that wanted to take away this new entitlement and risk losing their seats.  I'll believe the repeal-only talk when I see the ACA officially dead.  That scheme by Obama's people has well and truly screwed the insurance system that was in place pre-ACA and that was the intention.  It was always meant to fail and force a reliance on single payer because by that time there would be no viable insurance alternative.  America is, at best, headed for a two-tiered health care system.  Those with the money to pay for services will receive one level of expertise while everyone else will get what's left, AFTER waiting for months.

At best, we can probably expect a situation similar to what our friends to the North are experiencing: https://www.fraserinstitute.org/studies/waiting-your-turn-wait-times-for-health-care-in-canada-2016

http://www.ctvnews.ca/health/healthcare-wait-times-hit-20-weeks-in-2016-report-1.3171718

http://www.torontosun.com/2017/02/16/canada-has-worst-erreferral-wait-times-in-11-developed-countries-report

This isn't an attempt to attack Canada, BTW.  It's just the closest country with a similar population for comparison.  At bottom, it is all about availability of resources and prioritizing, even rationing of those resources.  The ACA was a cynical attempt to destroy the very flawed but functional existing system of health care and to replace it with a European style single payer model.  It has driven the middle class into a place where their premiums have skyrocketed and their deductibles have made the use of their policies nearly impossible, while the poor pay nothing and get to see doctors sooner.  There HAS to be a better fix that is more equitable for everyone.

Like every other issue we face today in the U.S., wealthy Lobbyists call the tunes and the rest of us dance, whether we like it or not.  Be sure of one thing as you contemplate this mess.  The baby Gard case in the U.K. WILL be an issue here as well once the government is the only source for your health care.  Nameless, faceless, totally unaccountable bureaucrat bean-counters will make life and death decisions on your behalf and you will have NO RECOURSE unless you are wealthy.

What scrambling?  They are simply useless.  This vote isn't even to vote it through.  It is just the vote to bring it to the floor for discussion.  Isn't this what you need to happen?  What are they afraid of?  The Progs filibustering?  Let them.  Put it back in their court so when Obamacare does collapse, the GOP can keep their hands clean.

That does seem to be the only path left to them.

But those damned Republicrats .... aren't these the same schmucks that voted to repeal it when Obama was President, eight times?!

Now that it means more than putting on a show, they have no guts at all.

We need a 3rd Party, BADLY.

Sorry bro, there is no such thing as keeping their hands clean with a Republican President, and a Republican majority in the House and Senate.  Anything that happens now is on them.

Keep dreaming.  However, with the collective intelligence of that group (has nothing to do with ideology or street smarts), they'll find a way to bend over backwards to take the blame.

I know if I spent 7 years complaining about something, and it was finally my time to shine, I'd be damn sure I already had a plan.

I agree.  The republicans have been ineffective and fickle, but Obamacare and it's designed collapse will still be on the heads of the Progs.

We do have a 3rd party... multiple parties that seem to be ignored every election with exception of independents.

We don't need a 3rd party.  We need to revamp the two we have.  This has happened 5 times before.  It's time for it to happen again.  We need to return these parties back to American principles.  The Founding Fathers did not believe in "Parties", but two is a good compromise reflecting the duality of America.

that is the problem, their priority is to keep their hands clean. something we, about 300m Americans do not care much about.

i know there is no way in hell they can make it any cheaper, or offer better coverage for the same price.  our concern is  how bad can they fk it up.

That may be the one thing in their favor.  With their ineptness, even they can't fnck it up anymore than it already is.

Trump that is.

Great plan - abdication of responsibility more like. He was elected president - the Republicans were elected to majorities in both houses (I think) to take decisions, to make hard choices. - burying ones head in the sand and hoping someone else - not actually in power will get the blame,  is not effective leadership or governance.

Just my tupence worth.

This has been the GOP's signature issue for seven years and now it turns out they simply don't have a better idea. I'd say this is stunning, except this has been patently obvious all along.

We have all sorts of good ideas that wouldn’t take much to implement.  We’ve been talking about them for 8 years.  The stunning part is that the GOP has no will or unity and it really doesn’t take much of either to pull their d**** out of the mud.  I guess they don’t realize that if they don’t do something now, they won’t be around for another term and then they’ll have to go back to second fiddle hoping that the Progs give them a few crumbs.  We just went through an 8 year dictatorship.  I think the people are fed up with it.  But if we don’t get legitimate legislators in office then we’ll just end up as another European nation.  And that p***es me off to no end.  Nothing personal toward those Europeans here.  Socialism seems to work for you, for now anyway.  Social engineering doesn’t work here.

:tu: Exactly!!!

This has been one of the worst drawn out laughs in a LONG time!...

"We need the majority in congress...we need the majority in the senate...we need the presidency!"...

Well they asked for it,they got it...

There are no more excuses,we atleast need 1 more party to tie break this cycle of stupidity that has gone on far too long of party over country and other fellow Americans!

That's a dream i hope to see come true before i leave this earth ;)

Think he was refering to a possible future where a party rises from outta nowhere mixed of free thinkers and former reps and dems who finally had enough of their former parties partisan "hive minds"

People are going to one day wake up and say to themselves "ya know,i really havn't 100% agreed with 65+ mil others from either of these 2 sides all these years"

I have a dream! ;)

I suggest a communist party. That would make things pretty fun.

That’s right, he *RUNS* the country.  He doesn’t make law.  It’s called separation of powers.
