Still Waters Posted July 26, 2017 #1 Share Posted July 26, 2017 Quote Two former leaders of an isolated polygamous community in Canada were convicted Monday of practicing polygamy after a decades-long legal fight, setting up another potential court battle over the constitutionality of Canada's polygamy laws. Winston Blackmore, 60, and James Oler, 53, were found guilty by British Columbia Supreme Court Justice Sheri Ann Donegan, who said the evidence was clear that Blackmore was married to 25 women at the same time and that Oler was married to five women in the tiny community of Bountiful. https://uk.news.yahoo.com/canadian-polygamous-leader-found-guilty-having-25-wives-224344487.html https://uk.news.yahoo.com/man-24-wives-145-children-convicted-polygamy-082400743.html

Dark_Grey Posted July 26, 2017 #3 Share Posted July 26, 2017 (edited) Quote setting up another potential court battle over the constitutionality of Canada's polygamy laws. Legal polygamy + reduced age of consent (it's coming) = legalized cult practices Edited July 26, 2017 by Dark_Grey
GlitterRose Posted July 26, 2017 #4 Share Posted July 26, 2017 (edited) I don't care who someone is sleeping with and I don't think it's any of the government's business (providing they're of legal age and giving their consent), but I have to ask how all those children are supported. freetoroam Posted July 26, 2017 #6 Share Posted July 26, 2017 If the wives are not bothered, then why should the courts be? as long as they are not underage and there are no major fights over the bathroom, then each to his / her own.

GlitterRose Posted July 26, 2017 #8 Share Posted July 26, 2017 Oh my... Polygamists have multiple wives and dozens of children, but the state only recognizes one marriage. That leaves the rest of the wives to claim themselves as single moms with armies of children to support. Doing that means they can apply for welfare, which they do. And it's all legal. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwja2binn6fVAhXBPCYKHSRyCZ8QFggmMAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cnn.com%2FCNN%2FPrograms%2Fanderson.cooper.360%2Fblog%2F2006%2F05%2Fhow-polygamy-affects-your-wallet.html&usg=AFQjCNHr8Yd1DbB1OItYYUg3DRVUEil-Lw

GlitterRose Posted July 26, 2017 #12 Share Posted July 26, 2017 (edited) Oh...looky here... And few appear to be more adept at sucking up public dollars than millionaire polygamist and self-styled “Bishop of Bountiful” Winston Blackmore, whose 22 wives and 119 children all draw taxpayers’ funds while pursuing their openly polygamous and illegal lifestyle in Bountiful, located in southern B.C. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=7&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwiBzcSvpKfVAhUEOiYKHRjcCyMQFghQMAY&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.financialpost.com%2Frelated%2Ftopics%2Fpolygamist%2Bleader%2Bsees%2Btaking%2Bmoney%2F1702751%2Fstory.html&usg=AFQjCNEpaeoHWGIXIjNKnci7QNE0AbtmpA Back in 2009 when he "only" had 22 wives and 119 children. glorybebe Posted July 26, 2017 #13 Share Posted July 26, 2017 This cult has ties to Warren Jeffs. They marry 12 and 13 year old children. They have the 'celestial' wives living off welfare to scam the system. The number of children that have been sexually abused in their little communes is sickening. The women are brainwashed that this is their duty and that the more children they gave, the higher in heaven they go. There has to be something to help these poor girls escape from this sect. But, most of them are kept on their land and not allowed off. I grew up near that community and it sickens me to think of what those children have gone through.

GlitterRose Posted July 26, 2017 #15 Share Posted July 26, 2017 I found it interesting that during the whole Warren Jeffs thing, he literally told his followers that he was a fraud...and they were like...we know you're just testing us. *headdesk* What can you do with people like this?

As well, the boys that grow up in the community are virtually slave labour on the farms and in logging. When they reach 18 they're basically thrown out.

I met both of these guys. Blackmore s an incredibly arrogant man who thinks he is above the law and rules of society. How do you think he became a millionaire? It wasn't just through his business. He takes the welfare money from his wives. He controls all aspects of the finances.

GlitterRose Posted July 26, 2017 #21 Share Posted July 26, 2017 And the thing is, they can put these guys in prison, and yeah...at least they can't molest anyone anymore (or for a time). But Warren Jeffs is still running his cult from behind bars. Those people are that brainwashed.
papageorge1 Posted July 26, 2017 #22 Share Posted July 26, 2017 (edited) I don't understand this. Canada must have a legal marriage system in place. If these marriages are not officially being registered with the Canadian government, what business does the government have in getting involved?? Am I missing something here? Now, sex with minors is a law I can understand, but not polygamy. Edited July 26, 2017 by papageorge1

She escaped and had a hell of a time of it. There were death threats against her because she spoke out. And they hide behind freedom of religion. Freedom of religion allowing them to basically enslave their own children. The government needs to do more to help the kids. I was told by one removed member that the cemeteries needed to be excavated for the true numbers of the abused to be seen.

If they will not talk to non believers, how can they find out what they have been taught their whole lives is a farce? They are under the control of the men in every aspect of their lives. I know some one just reading about this in an article can't fathom the lives these women and children lead. If you had witnessed it first hand you would have a whole new view of this cult.
