Primordial asteroids discovered

Astronomers recently discovered a relatively unpopulated region of the main asteroid belt, where the few asteroids present are likely pristine relics from early in solar system history. The team used a new search technique that also identified the oldest known asteroid family, which extends throughout the inner region of the main asteroid belt.

SCIENTISTS have discovered asteroids that are relics from the solar system’s early history.

According to findings published in the journal Science, researchers have uncovered a previously unknown family of darkly coloured asteroids, which may be the oldest objects in the known universe.

“We discovered a [4 billion year-old] asteroid family extending across the entire inner part of the Main Belt, whose members include most dark asteroids previously unlinked to families,” the researchers wrote in a study synopsis. “This allows us to identify some original planetesimals, which are all larger than 35km, supporting the view of asteroids being born big.”

The universe itself is thought to be around 4.6 billion years old.

Ummm.... Shouldn't that be 14.6 billion years old?

(not your fault Oz - the article has it wrong - unless I'm wrong which has been known to happen - from time to time)

As i stated in a another thread Asteroids and Meteors hold vice versa properties.........and when they collide into a planet create water deposit's that contain the ability to create life.

The universe is ~13.8242 billion years old. The solar system is ~4.6. So yeah. The article was wrong. It means oldest in the solar system.
