seeder Posted August 21, 2017 #1 Share Posted August 21, 2017 Quote Nasa plans to make oxygen from atmosphere on Mars If successful, experiment will mark a major step towards making Mars habitable for human colonies in the future Nasa is planning to make oxygen from the atmosphere on Mars when its next robot arrives on the mysterious red planet in 2020. Scientists will send microbial life - possibly algae or bacteria - on the 2020 Rover mission in a bid to create air fit for human consumption. They aim to feed the microorganisms in Martian soil in the hope that they will pump out oxygen as a byproduct. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/mars-nasa-2020-rover-oxygen-microorganism-algae-bacteria-robert-lightfoot-moon-international-space-a7902531.html
GlitterRose Posted August 21, 2017 #2 Share Posted August 21, 2017 We're terraforming it? That sounds like a bad sci-fi movie.

XenoFish Posted August 21, 2017 #5 Share Posted August 21, 2017 Kinda hope it works. Maybe the smart civilized people can get off planet before the primatives blow everything to hell.

spud the mackem Posted August 21, 2017 #7 Share Posted August 21, 2017 Anything that we send to Mars will be alien to that planet so we will be polluting it.
TonopahRick Posted August 21, 2017 #8 Share Posted August 21, 2017 Right now it is a big "dead" rock that no one is using so anything we send up there will be an improvement in my view.

A colony on Mars does not require terraforming, it can exist within pressurised habitats in much the same way that astronauts survive on the space station. What a colony does require is oxygen, In the shorter term, if oxygen can be generated on Mars it will make it easier to send expeditions there. Astronauts on the surface will not have to haul there oxygen supply all the way from Earth. It might even be possible to resupply the mission with oxygen at Mars for the voyage home, greatly reducing the weight of the spaceship needed.
