Scary Encounters with Evil Fairies

Quote

Most people will imagine faeries as little pixies flying about on gossamer wings; benevolent sprites which are shy at best and invisible to us at worst. Most often linked in with Celtic legend, fairies in some form or another actually play an important role in the folklore of many cultures throughout the world, where they have been portrayed as everything from nature spirits, to fallen angels, to conversely demons. They come in all shapes and sizes and are attributed with an array of paranormal powers, but far from being merely the denizens of legend there has actually been a good number of very real fairy sightings and encounters over the centuries. They are indeed far too numerous to list here, but one thing they mostly tend to adhere to is that fairies are for the most part benevolent, or at the very least innocuous and relatively unconcerned with us. Yet there are other reports and accounts, although rarer, that paint the fairies we envision in a different light, that of destructive, threatening entities that wish to do us harm in one way or another.

I always imagined faeries as being made up and not actually real, but each to their own I suppose.

Maybe they are the Revenue and Taxation Department.

I'd not toss out every fairy sighting automatically, but I am skeptical of there being tiny, inches tall, intelligent beings who have butterfly wings on their backs, who flutter across the forests and meadows.

I've seen some interesting fakes in the past, but I've never actually read a fairy report that couldn't be put full of holes.

"....to fallen angels, to conversely demons." - Just wanted to point out that conversely means now giving an opposite. But, as far as I know, a fallen angel and a demon are the same thing. There were no demons till Satan led a portion of the angels in revolt and they were cast out. - Just a nit pick.....

To use a Supernstural reference, Castiel is a Fallen Angel but Crowley's a demon.

I have a story of "unwelcoming" Fay, not my account but my mums.

her and my step dad owned a campervan and decided to stay one night at a popular walking spot in the Brecon Beacons national park in South Wales. A beautiful walk with waterfalls running around a mile up to a large fall  that you can walk behind at the top.

as it dropped dark they retired to the van because of uncomfortable feelings of being watched, they continued their evening inside the van with their two dogs. They pulled all the curtains. They kept hearing voices outside and thought it was other people then tapping at the van. My step dad said not to worry but neither of them dared to look out of the window because they were sure something would be looking back, the tapping and voices continued to circle the van, even the dogs were growling and upset, then it all stopped, at sleep time they dared to open the door to let the dogs out for a night time pee, but neither dog would go out. They went to bed and the tapping continued all night. Neither of them slept a wink. As soon as it was light the pegged it out of there as fast as they could.

a few years later my mum met with a spiritual group and was introduced to her spirit guide, he told her of the night and how it was undine that wanted the place to themselves that night for a sacred celebration.

Later my mum looked up undine only to learn they are a kind of water spirit.

Well the author is supposedly a "crypto expert" and that says a lot about the claim.

Not unusual the Fairy tradition often talks about their pranks, tricks and downright nastiness .... for  some people !

Its also related to behaviour ,  chop down their fav tree or disturb one of their special places .. you may as well stir up a bull ants nest !

Leave them out a treat, and they do you favours and look after you.   ;)

I can think of zero other explanations for the sound of voices and a tapping noise on a caravan at a popular camping location.  Once you've completely ruled out other human beings by not looking out of your window to see exactly what it is then we can only conclude water spirits.  They did mention a waterfall and it seems likely the spirits followed them back and spent the night mildly annoying them.

I'mConvinced.

Ah, sure and begod, ye're all for the fairies! 'Tis soft in the head ye are for sure!

One hundred and fifty years ago there were fairies everywhere in Ireland. Then they introduced general basic education for all followed by rural electrification and, later again, radio broadcasting.

There hasn't been sight nor sound of a fairy in Ireland since. Divil a bit! :)

Now, if your talking about them other full sized fairies mincing about our clubs and pubs, throwing their limp-wristed hand about ... well, there's plenty of them around , and let them at it. Variety is the spice of life.

I find this kind of funny. Because there are still stories about fairy sightings in the world, it's just too daft to call them fairies anymore. Folks can believe in ghosts, cryptids, urban legends, demons, and even ET now a days, but fairies are a whole level of crazy even those folks aren't willing to go for. But a handful of the wee folk have translated into modern lore. Banshees are ghosts/spirits now, fairy dogs and cats are ghosts, demons, and cryptids now, merfolk are cryptids now, components of the wild hunt have translated into various ghost, cryptid, and urban legend tales.. Fairies have even made the jump to really modern lore, and the abductions, time losses, weird lights in the sky, and strange rings/formations on the ground and in crops that used to be attributed to fairies are now attributed to ET's in UFO's.

WALES is a hotbed of fairy haunting activity – according to a league compiled by one of the country’s leading experts in the field.

Janet Bord has compiled a Top 10 of fairy haunting hotspots in the UK, with Welsh sites peppering the top of the charts.

The fairy specialist – who has published scores of studies including Fairies: Real Encounters with the Little People and The Traveller’s Guide to Fairy Sites – said the findings follow painstaking accounts of fairy sightings across the whole of Wales, as well as her own personal visits.

“I know of a story of a woman who was walking her dog in an area of Hiraethog, near Snowdonia, and found a very neatly made little wigwam-style [cottage] made out of little sticks, ferns and pine, and had a little palisade fence made out of twigs.

“She took a photograph of it, which I included in my book – but she never found it again, and it remains unexplained.”

More fool the Irish for getting rid of their ancient beliefs and legends.

We still have our legends. We'll never get rid of them. Beliefs, now they're a different kettle of fish! Nowadays we defer to empiricism and are less likely to believe anything uncritically. That's too gullible.

Does that make us foolish? Hardly.

After all these years of inviting faries into my house to collect unneeded teeth, I had no idea that they were evil! That's it from now on, any teeth that become available will be left under a pillow in the garden!!.....I don't want to upset them by withholding teeth tho, no idea what they might do if angry....

The tooth-fairy is a lovely tradition. Keep it up. They are the most benign and loving creatures and never get upset because YOU are the tooth-fairy yourself.

I know I'm not being a realist here. When I was a kid, I always truly believed that fairies were real and they were just connected with the earth and nature itself. Many times I'd walk through the forest and talk to them out loud. If anyone saw me back than, they'd think what a nut I was, lol!!

Many people try to scare little kids by making them believe that fairies are evil and that they'll hurt you or haunt you. Kids will believe anything that you tell them until they end up realizing you were lying to them. There's still that little kid inside of me that will always believe that fairies are not evil. If they are real. I doubt they would reveal themselves to anyone since they are scared to death of humans.

The stories fall under similar tales of belligerent little people throughout the centuries, notably from ancient texts. Often described as thieves, mischievous, dangerous and very elusive. At times described physically as 2 legs, 2 arms and reptile like skin with human shaped facial features, they wear clothing of color created from grass or even silk, dyed using berries, usually red to deter predators and layered with spider webs giving a wispy appearance. Other descriptions mention pointy hats worn and very aggressive in numbers with a diet of various bugs. It's said where you see a lot of bug carcasses and no spiders, you'll find fairies. I think they say similar regarding fairy rings (circle of mushrooms) Other stories point to them as mystical with powers to enter and exit our world as they desire.

Yep. For centuries, fairies weren't winged little critters with happy magic and silly grins. They were feared spirits who punished lazy housewives and unproductive children, who could lead you astray in the forest and kill you.

Then the Victorians made them all airy-fairy and hence a lot more consumable by the masses. I'm surprised they had the time between scraping paint off of stolen Greek monuments and bowdlerizing Asian art.

Fairies are not evil. Only people are sometimes irritating them.

Terry Pratchett has two references to fairy invasions in his books.  They are really evil.  Fortunately for Discworld they had Tiffany Aching and the Nac Mac Feagals.  I am not sure who we have that can stand against the beguilement and glamour of evil fairies.

Crivins!

Books by Terry Pratchett  are phantasy. :P Real Fairies  are likeable beings.  People could see them in meditation for example.
