New evidence suggests octopuses aren't loners

Still Waters

Recommended Posts

Octopuses are usually solitary creatures, but a new site in the waters off the east coast of Australia is the home of up to 15 gloomy octopuses (Octopus tetricus) that have been been observed communicating—either directly as in den evictions or indirectly through posturing, chasing or color changes, according to findings reported in the journal Marine and Freshwater Behaviour and Physiology.

The new site is the second gloomy octopus settlement found in the area, and the discovery lends credence to the idea that octopuses are not necessarily loners.

Both spellings are used and both are acceptable.

It only stands to reason that octopuses/octopi have to come together at some point. After all, they have to make baby octopuses/octopi, don't they?

It should actually be "octopodes", but no one ever seems to use that term.

It would be cool to see a gang of Octopi shaking 8 other tentacles at the same time. Like a big web of "hello"

Sounds to me like we're gonna be going to war with the Octarmy pretty soon. Kim Long Ams has his tentacle quietly hovering over the big red button, poised to send us back to to the cave.

The Beatle's Octopus' Garden comes to mind.  Where's Ringo when you need him?

Is a group of squid called a squad?

Hadn't really thought about their social life. So, if you live alone in a house in a crowded neighborhood, you're not antisocial, you're just a wallflower.

Yes, or a shoal. A group of giant squid is called a school.
