Eldorado Posted October 4, 2017 #1 Share Posted October 4, 2017 An outbreak of high contagious plague has claimed 30 lives in the impoverished Indian Ocean island nation of Madagascar over the last two months, authorities said Wednesday. "We have recorded 194 suspected cases of plague, including 30 deaths," health official Manitra Rakotoarivony said in a statement, updated the death toll from 25. Madagascar has a history of plague outbreaks almost every year since 1980, often sparked by rats fleeing forest fires. The current outbreak is unusual as it has affected urban areas, increasing the risk of transmission, said the World Health Organisation. Mike Lansing Posted October 6, 2017 #2 Share Posted October 6, 2017 Plague is endemic to Madagascar, and that is why Hitler wanted to ship the Jews there: it would have been a giant gas chamber, except that Yersinia pestis would substitue for the Zyklon B.. Michelle Posted November 13, 2017 #4 Share Posted November 13, 2017 In Madagascar, ceremonies in which families exhume the remains of dead relatives, rewrap them in fresh cloth and dance with the corpses are a sacred ritual. But an outbreak of plague sweeping the Indian Ocean island nation has prompted warnings that the macabre spectacle, known as the turning of the bones or bodyturning, presents a serious risk of contamination. On a recent baking hot Saturday in Ambohijafy, a village outside the capital Antananarivo, a "turning" procession snaked through the streets in a fevered carnival atmosphere bound for the cemetery. cont... https://medicalxpress.com/news/2017-10-plague-madagascar-dead.html

+and-then Posted November 19, 2017 #6 Share Posted November 19, 2017 Plague is easily treatable with antibiotics, these days. IF you can get the victims to take them. Of course, eradicating the fleas from the rodents would be a better solution, but the countries burdened by the plague aren't able to afford such hygienic practices, I guess.
