One can indeed visualize ceremony being associated with the process given the rather elaborate nature of such. One wonders if the process may have been handed down along a somewhat specific lineage or similar line of descendancy. Also, my earlier use of the acronym FCR may have caused some confusion due to regional variances in usage. In my case, the utilization of the acronym was in regards to fire cracked rock as associated with hot-rock boiling, winter interior heating, etc. Edit: Phrasing The Lenape of South Jersey used stone boiling rather than over a fire so FCR applies there too. I've seen dozens of those bright red Pennsauken chert nodules. They also processed water lotus over large beds of heated stones (water lotus was actually brought in by the Fox Creek Culture and cannot be found through floatation below that complex) Apparently the area of Mantua Creek was the center of lithic production in South Jersey from the Middle Archaic to the Middle Woodland with lithic materials being brought in large quanities from as far away as Maryland and Central P.A. so a guess is it was probably a clan that controlled production. i'm talking about Piney Island/Poplar Island points and Koens Crispin broadspears not Adena/Middlesex , Fox Creek or Meadowood which was traded

Harte Correct, however he was the reason why the population at the time, in ancient Greece, held the belief that the Earth was a sphere. Aristotle was the first, as far as we currently know, to present evidence of the spherical Earth.
