War Horse sculpture banned from roundabouts

An artist has been told to stop displaying a giant horse sculpture on roundabouts by councillors who say it could cause accidents.

Damian O'Connor put his 10ft (3m) War Horse at several sites near Norwich.

Norfolk County Council said it was an "obstruction" and not allowed on "highway land", as reported in the EDP.

Mr O'Connor hit back at the "jobworths" and said drivers rarely crash into Nelson's Column or the Arc de Triomphe, which are also on roundabouts.

There are loads of roundabout sculptures across the UK and, as far as I'm aware, not one has caused an accident.

Heh, if an artist was sneaking his giant art onto different roundabouts in the middle of the night without permission from the town around here, they would get asked to stop it too. I can imagine that it might be distracting if in the evening when heading to or from work the drive is as usual, and in the morning suddenly there's a giant horse in the middle of the roundabout.

Why haven't drivers found the other roundabout sculptures around the UK distracting like, for example, this rather saucy sculpture of the goddess Athena at a London roundabout? Why does this statue not cause accidents by drivers gawping at it but a statue of a horse would?

Well... do other roundabout installations have a habit of randomly showing up at various locations without sanctioning or approval in the middle of the night? Or are they more typically approved and installed permanently in their locations?

This is street art. If the argument against it is distraction, then the approved or sanctioned art installation would distract as well.

LOL...I somehow doubt his sculpture is the next Arc de Triomphe.

If it wasn't extremely large and obnoxious Bad Art, maybe they would cut him some slack.

But things being as they are...he's just SOL.

He should spend his time more productively by tramping out crop circles in the wee hours of the morning.

Does it matter? The issue here is whether drivers find them distracting - and they don't seem to do so. I've never heard of a crash caused by a roundabout sculpture.

Well it's a depiction of a war horse, commemorating the many thousands of horses which were killed on the battlefields of WWI.
