Oscar Pistorius’ prison sentence was increased to 13 years and five months by South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal on Friday, more than doubling the Olympic runner’s jail term for the murder of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

In an announcement that took a matter of minutes, Supreme Court Justice Willie Seriti said the Supreme Court upheld an appeal by prosecutors against Pistorius’ original six-year sentence for shooting Steenkamp multiple times in his home in 2013.

The original 6 year sentence smacks of backhanders to me.

Thirteen years still seems lenient. He will still be fairly young and gets to resume his life.

She's dead.

No need for backhanders. He's a white celebrity in South Africa.

Is specialised treatment with sentences the norm there then?   (The average sentence for murder there is 15 years).

I'd assume so. The remnants of apartheid are hard to shake and South Africa is one of the most racist countries in the world. Though it should be noted that both sides are extremely racist, whites have all the money and power meaning it's black people who suffer from institutional racism. The results end up being predictable. It makes sense that this would impact the judicial system like it does in countries like Australia and the US. I'd be extremely surprised if it was not far, far worse in SA, than those two countries though.

Add this to the fact that he is a rich, privileged celebrity and it seems obvious that in a country where a black man was last year sentenced to 77 years for murder and rhino poaching that something was deeply wrong with his 6 year sentence for murdering an unarmed woman.

Mind you, women are treated as second-class citizens in the country, so I should have added 'male' to the list too.

Merely anecdotal, but I worked briefly with a South African woman who had left as part of the diaspora and she was one of the most disgustingly racist people I have ever met. I mean I was truly shocked by her. I think that is true for most of them. After all, it must be very difficult to be part of a culture of apartheid - where you're told from birth that you are superior to black people and that they are the scum of the earth - and walk away without it having some effect on your views.

If I were the Blade Runner, I wouldn't be asking for an appeal!  It might get his sentence doubled again.
