Still Waters Posted December 5, 2017 #1 Share Posted December 5, 2017 The first Scrooge How the world’s best-known miser was brought to life. “Scrooge is utterly memorable. He is loathed and loved. His name is dropped into conversation so regularly - yet many people have never read the story in which he first appears.” http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/resources/idt-sh/the_first_scrooge
+Hammerclaw Posted December 5, 2017 #2 Share Posted December 5, 2017 I've read it every year since childhood and watch the Alistair Sims movie version every Christmas. Much of the literate class in America in that era were Anglophiles. This story, as well as Prince Albert's Christmas Tree, profoundly influenced and moderated American's Puritanical disdain for Christmas celebration and their subsequent adoption of it as a holiday of special significance. In short, it taught them to keep Christmas, well.
