Popular Post Farmer77 Posted December 12, 2017 Popular Post #1 Share Posted December 12, 2017 (edited) Howdy, I had an experience I wanted to share and rather than try and jam it in another thread I thought it might be cool if we shared our interesting, exciting and or scary outdoor stories. I was charged by a bobcat! I was sitting in my Kayak casting a fly probably 20ft from the bank when a big cat came walking out of the woods. It saw me, froze and after sizing me up it just walked on down the bank as I scrambled to get my phone out to get a pic. Pic didn't happen but it was still a really cool experience. About a half an hour later I needed to stretch so I landed the kayak and was walking the bank when I heard a growl and saw the reeds start shaking and bending as it ran at me. It was a straight up Ghost and the Darkness moment LOL. I scrambled backwards into the lake and it stopped at the last layer of reeds offering just a glimpse of it before it turned back. My heart was racing and I realized bobcats aren't quite as small in real life as they are in my mind. Ok so not a great story but it was a neat experience. Let's hear yours! Farmer77 Posted December 12, 2017 Author #3 Share Posted December 12, 2017 Here's another ive posted before I had spent the day fishing on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska. It was late in the season so we had what seemed like the whole peninsula to ourselves . After spending the day bouncing around between the major waters we stopped to hit one last small creek as it dumped into Skilak lake before we headed home. My buddy and I separated and I found a nice deep bend in the river to drag a fly through. It took a bit of work to get myself into casting position on the outside corner of the bend. As I was tying on a cream-orange egg pattern I heard a deep quick growl. I had already had several bear encounters that year so my nerves were a little frayed despite the fact that this didnt sound like a bear and I grabbed the pepper spray and turned around to see nothing. Scanning the woods I saw absolutely nothing no movement , no sound, nothing. Then it happened again, this time what sounded like a frustrated sigh followed by a slightly deeper and longer growl seemingly coming from two feet in front of me. The sense of dread and terror was immediately overwhelming. I was in the middle of a powerlifting kick at the time so I was weighing around 300# . I wish some NFL scouts had been there because despite the years of being trained not to do what I was about to do my instinct kicked in and I ran like the hounds of hell themselves were chasing me. I was taking out trees, leaping stumps straight sprinting, I didnt even slow down as I reached my buddy who was fishing closer to the car but he saw me coming and followed suit. Reaching the car I still felt that overwhelming sense of dread but we sat for a good half an hour looking for whatever it was that made that sound never seeing a thing

The west coast is unbelievably beautiful, I looked at taking a job up there at one point.

Probably just outside Vancouver - somewhere near the wilderness but not too far from civilisation. It has among the best climates in the country which appeals to me. I always fancied it, but their cannabis laws have converted me forever. I have siblings in Australia and have dreamed about that too but I prefer weather, seasons, and not having to worry about giant spiders and snakes. I could probably take a Canadian bear though. I was near Soldatna fishing on the Kenai River for a week (pulling in 60 pound Alaska King Salmon the whole time too). Well you can only fish from a boat every other day so every odd day it was hip waders from the bank. One day I decided to be smart and move upstream from everyone to get to the fish a bit sooner and found a great spot, it was so great that as I stood there casting I hear a little splash behind me, turn around and see an easily 900 pound bear. He walked about 10 feet over to my left (maybe to get to the fish slightly before me ) and planted himself in the river to fish. I very slowly backed away, gathered my gear and walked backwards for 50 yards to where the rest of the humans were, shaking like a leaf the entire time.
Piney Posted December 12, 2017 #7 Share Posted December 12, 2017 I found these a few years back in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. Followed her previous adventures.( You DO NOT actively track a big cat) but lost track of her. I knew it was a "her" because of the cub tracks.

I have found a few cougar scrapes over the years, always makes me glance over my shoulder for a while. Is that a Virginia Dragoon .44 cal single action? Looks just like mine.

Cowboy hats and boots with riding heels are for suburban rednecks and country line dancers. You would like hanging out with Indian ranch hands. We're all metal heads.

I lost them when I went to prison.

I didn't get paid much but I could ride when I wanted. Fixing broken fences and shoveling horse manure out of the stalls was the best job I ever had. Edit to add, I had a cowboy hat but I never wore it at work. Edited December 12, 2017 by OverSword

BorizBadinov Posted December 12, 2017 #14 Share Posted December 12, 2017 That's a shame, look like nice pieces. I'm a big fan of Ruger but never had a Berretta.

I wanted what Kevin Costner carried in Wyatt Earp because of the smoked nickle finish so I called The Blue Dome. They told me they didn't make the piece, Beretta did. Then the guy said Beretta made a better product anyway (great Colt salesman huh?). When I took it for it's speed job the smith would only use Colt parts so it had colt guts.

I just let my boys buy them now and I borrow them.

My 17 Enfield no longer cut the mustard as a saddle gun. My stepmother gave me her Ruger mini 30. and she bought a AR15. A Bushmaster because it was better and cheaper than the damn Colt.

Timothy Posted December 13, 2017 #20 Share Posted December 13, 2017 I got chased by a wild animal once. It was an emu, I was maybe 10 at the time so it seemed pretty big and it was scary as hell! It was on a track down into a nature reserve across the road from my house, I had to jump into a thick scrub of bracken with my dog and scream at it until it went away. Got nicely scratched up too. It would have been pretty funny to watch, I was running as fast as I could at the time but was not going to outrun it by a long shot. They did have nests near the lake in that area, so probably just a protective mummy. The chicks were so cute. We would go and get the eggs that didn’t hatch and had been abandoned, very pretty eggs, drained and placed on a shelf.

I watched a swan tear up a kid next to Batsto lake when I was about 12.

He is unhappy, grey, wrinkled stressed out and overweight and I have 20 somethings ogling me in the dojo and I laugh at everything. Likely Guy Posted December 13, 2017 #24 Share Posted December 13, 2017 I was almost taken out by a mother grouse once. It was a one lane road into the block we were working and she had about eight chicks behind her, waddling up the road. I parked and got out to 'shoo' them off the road. She took exception, turned around and came flying claw first at my face. True story bro.
SHaYap Posted December 13, 2017 #25 Share Posted December 13, 2017 I had a four foot plus monitor lizard eye me munching down some fired chicken the other night ... must have been real hungry cause it kept flicking the tongue at me (or chicken) Been a wet and drenching month over the week so carrion must have been poor pickings in the area. Tossed the bones over at it and it gobbled them all up ... and turned to leave when there was none left ... without so much as a thank you ... I guess it was the tax collector for the night ... ~
