Pentagon rejected chemical weapons

THE Pentagon considered developing a host of non-lethal chemical weapons that would disrupt discipline and morale among enemy troops, newly declassified documents reveal.

Most bizarre among the plans was one for the development of an "aphrodisiac" chemical weapon that would make enemy soldiers sexually irresistible to each other. Provoking widespread homosexual behaviour among troops would cause a "distasteful but completely non-lethal" blow to morale, the proposal says.

Other ideas included chemical weapons that attract swarms of enraged wasps or angry rats to troop positions, making them uninhabitable. Another was to develop a chemical that caused "severe and lasting halitosis", making it easy to identify guerrillas trying to blend in with civilians. There was also the idea of making troops' skin unbearably sensitive to sunlight.

The proposals, from the US Air Force Wright Laboratory in Dayton, Ohio, date from 1994. The lab sought Pentagon funding for research into what it called "harassing, annoying and 'bad guy'-identifying chemicals". The plans have been posted online by the Sunshine Project, an organisation that exposes research into chemical and biological weapons.

Spokesman Edward Hammond says it was not known if the proposed $7.5 million, six-year research plan was ever pursued.

There are some twisted people in the Pentagon. dontgetit.gif After all these plans wouldn't it in theory be easier just to drop a bomb on the enemy?

This article reminds me of a plaground scenario were a group of boys are trying to compete in who can tell the sickest jokes. Except its grown men trying to compete in who can cause the most sadistic reactions through weapons.

When you can't torture the enemy like they do us, you have to be inventive. cool.gif

OK that ones strange. Non-lethal means of warfare are a good idea. Even if you hit innocents no permanent harm done, no nuts can use human shields, less soldiers die on all sides all of which is very, very good politically and more importantly it means less cost to families.

Torture has nothing whatsoever to do with it it looks like the idea was to use these on enemy forces without the need for actual combat not for use on POW.

An we don't use torture?

Interesting ideas, though. But the U.S. has never really been interested in non-lethal weapons. In military or civilian use. We have the abilities to subdue non-armed persons, (firearms that is) but less than one percent of our police use these methods.

The original intent of Mustard gas and tear gas was for non-lethal control of enemy troops in WWII. But a simple gas mask defeated that.

LSD was invented by our good ol' boys to be used has a way to drop a persons ability or desire to fight.

Instead of trying to find better ways of killing and disarming others, and wasting trillions of dollars, why don't we find a way to make peace.

But then we had a 9/11

(Please Note: Extreme Sarcasm)
