Mokele-Mbembe

17 posts in this topic

Well, I read a book that had a little story about a...creature called the "Mokele-Mbembe" by the natives. It is rumored to be a dinosaur that has managed to survive extinction. Being rumored to be found in the Congo, there is very little information. This topic interests me greatly, and it would be a huge help if someone could post some?

Thanks!

Sorry for sounding skeptical about this but here we have all these natives who have seen this animal, They can track all sorts of animals (even little tiny ones) through the jungle but they can't track down an animal the size of a Bus ?

Hey!

They can track all sorts of animals (even little tiny ones) through the jungle but they can't track down an animal the size of a Bus ? all of the natives that explorers talked to near Lake Tele have great Legends about the Mokele-Mbembe and they know where it is but their tradition has them scared silly about it so they wont even go near it! i wish there was a picture too!

Thanks! -Joe

All the natives have extreme fear for going near these creatures, and have many legends warnign tehm to stay away from it. The fear of it is bred into them!

Thanks! -joe

I understand where you are coming from Joe013, but surely an animal this size would leave a track that even I could follow.

I believe that it DID exist.

I read this story once about the animal, in which an explorer show a picture of the brontosuar to a local tribe and they knew what it was. I can't remember all the story but they said they kill one but they got sick so they didn't eat it. I believe that was probably the last surviving Mokele-Mbembe that they had killed.

Thanks for all the replies. The thing you were talking about Dowdy:I can't remember all the story but they said they kill one but they got sick so they didn't eat it. I believe that was probably the last surviving Mokele-Mbembe that they had killed. This is the story of a band of pigmies that speared one to death in Lake Tele, after it broke through some sort of barrier they had made to keep it out of the lake and in some sort of cave. The story goes it took them a week to chop it up, (its a big animal) and that those who ate it, died within a few days. So now the tribes think it is cursed to eat too!! Goodness!! Too many legends to do any real research on this thing...but maybe the thing just went bad in the time it took for them to chop it up. And I'm sure that the Mokele-Mbembe leaves great trails, but it is EXTREMELY hard to get ANY researchers into the Congo, as they are very stubborn about not having people in or near Lake Tele. There has only been a few real expiditions, but almost all of them (I think) have reported seeing or hearing the creature. (or even its track, oracle) And any pictures of the monster (there have been a few) have been lost by bad keeping and been destroyed in the enviroment there.

Thanks

Here's an abriged version of a report on the Mokele-mbembe because I'm feeling lazy .

In 1980 Roy Mackel a crocodile specialist lead an expedition in search of this mythic beast . On his journey he recorded several eyewitness accounts . One of the older reports was givin by Firman Mosomele, who said that when he was 14 years old he had seen the creature while paddiling his canoe. He later identified a picture of a sauropod ( dinosaur) as the creature he had seen .

Another report was from a woman in Epena . Who said that 2 of the creatures had recently entered lake Tele from the Bai river . One had been killed by lakesiders , then cut up and eaten in spite of a local belief that people eating it's flesh would soon die .

One of the most circumstantial reports was given by Nicolas Mondongo . who claimed he had seen it's back , head , neck , part of a long tail and short legs. The head was topped with something like a cockscomb. As nearly as he could judge the creature was about 32 ft in length of which 6 to 10 ft was head and neck .

Convinced by such reports Dr. Mackel returned to Africa in 1981 ,on a 6 week expedition with French, American and Congolese scientists. There foray was highlighted by the discovery of " huge foot prints and a wide swath of bent and flattened vegetation. The tracks led into the river"

aerialhippo,

I've no idea what KP was trying to post, the address is incomplete and he used image tags (for displaying pictures) instead of the correct url address tags to link to the website. However, THIS SITE has pictures of the mokele-mbembe. The first three photo's supposedly show something strange in Lake Tele in the Congo. Make of them what you will. unsure.gif

Magikman

* - KP, if you happen to see this response, notice that this site also shows a photograph of the 'waterfall' monster you asked about in one of your other threads. It's the picture at the bottom of the page. original.gif
