crosis Posted March 6, 2002 #1 Share Posted March 6, 2002 Ananova : Scientists claim 'nuclear fusion in a jam jar' Scientists in the US claim to have simulated thermonuclear fusion in a jam jar. They say the power of the Sun was mimicked by passing sound waves through a container filled with nail polish remover. The waves expanded the bubbles then made them implode, releasing flashes of light and temperatures equal to those at the heart of the Sun. If the claim is correct it could lead to ways of producing clean, inexhaustible energy. The polish remover, acetone, is produced by trees, volcanoes and body fat and is a raw material in plastics, drugs and explosives. The research was carried out at the Oak Ridge Laboratory in Tennessee according to the journal Science and reported in Nature. As well as light flashes, the team saw neutrons emitted from the acetone which are an expected by-product of fusion. But Fred Becchetti of the University of Michigan warned: "Scientists will, and should, remain sceptical until the experiments are reproduced by others." Tommy Posted March 18, 2002 #4 Share Posted March 18, 2002 Sonic fusion? ??? "Scientists have reported that by bombarding a liquid with sound they were able to produce nuclear fusion in a tabletop apparatus." http://www.sciam.com/explorations/2002/031802fusion/ Tommy
