Americans come out, Canadians go in

Canadian soldiers taking charge in Kandahar

Large numbers of new Canadian soldiers have begun arriving in Kandahar, in southern Afghanistan, where they will take over command of the troubled region from the United States.

Within the next few weeks Canada expects to have about 2,000 soldiers on the ground in Afghanistan.

The assignment comes with increased risks, which the soldiers know and understand.

"Hopefully everybody is going to make it OK," Warrant Officer Paul Richard told CBC News. "However that is the job: to go in harm's way, to make the place better. That's what we do here."

Some of the Canadian troops will be helping the Afghan army hunt down Taliban insurgents. Their attacks in the Kandahar region are increasing, as the Canadians are increasing their troop level.

Suicide attacks are the main concern for troops.

Canadian diplomat Glyn Berry was killed and three soldiers were seriously wounded in a suicide car bomb attack earlier this month.
