quaneeri Posted September 23, 2003 #1 Share Posted September 23, 2003 Voyager's Message (Gold Disk) The Voyager craft carried with it a message from earth, addressed to any unknown civilisation it may encounter. http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/image/020...ord_voyager.jpg http://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/spacecraft/ima...es/VgrCover.jpg Explanation: Launched twenty-five years ago, NASA's Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft are now over 10 billion kilometers from the Sun. Still operational, the Voyagers are being tracked and commanded through the Deep Space Network. Having traveled beyond the outer planets, these remarkable spacecraft are only the third and fourth human built artifacts to escape our solar system, following in the footsteps of Pioneer 10 and 11. A 12-inch gold plated copper disk containing recorded sounds and images representing human cultures and life on Earth, is affixed to each Voyager - a message in a bottle cast into the cosmic sea. The recorded material was selected by a committee chaired by the late Carl Sagan. Simple diagrams on the cover (visible above) represent symbolically the spacecraft's origin and give instructions for playing the disk. The exotic construction of the disks should provide them with a long lifetime as they coast through interstellar space. The two spacecraft will not make a close approach to another planetary system for at least 40,000 years. http://solarsystem.nasa.gov/whatsnew/image...es-voyager.html
quaneeri Posted September 23, 2003 Author #2 Share Posted September 23, 2003 The Sounds of Earth. On the chance that someone is out there, NASA approved the placement of a phonograph record on each of the Voyager spacecraft. The recording, called "Sounds of Earth" fits on a 12-inch, copper disc containing greetings from Earth people in 60 languages, samples of music from different cultures and eras, and natural sounds of surf, wind and thunder, and birds, whales and other animals. The record also contains electronic information that an advanced technological civilization could convert into diagrams, pictures and printed words, including a message from President Carter. Cufflink Posted September 24, 2003 #3 Share Posted September 24, 2003 The thought that occurs to me about the voyagers, is that mankind will probably get to the stars long before the voyagers do, and one day, somewhere in the future, human spacecraft will recover the voyagers as rare museum pieces. Good bit about the disc's instructions. I'd always wondered how the passing aliens were supposed to be able to get it to work.
Engulf Posted September 24, 2003 #4 Share Posted September 24, 2003 i think this is a massively brilliant idea.hopefully it does able to reach an unknown civ. far far away and it'll certainly be a double whammy if there'd sent something back too in order to make contact with us.but like Cufflink mentioned,i think the disc would be a little confusing for the aliens though.....probably should've included Bill Gates inside the Voyager too (get him out of Earth!!) quaneeri Posted September 24, 2003 Author #5 Share Posted September 24, 2003 The aliens plan. (1) Bill Gates must invent an operating system that can be installed on a everyones desktop computer. (2) Come up with a network to link all these computers in cyberspace (3)Now they have control.

Blood Angel Posted October 27, 2003 #10 Share Posted October 27, 2003 Yes hostile species should also be considered, we literally gave them information on all of our weakness which can be exploited, and also giving them the impression that we are not as technologically advanced as they are
