Haunted places in Portland Oregon?

Recommended Posts

Not sure if this is the proper forum to post this in, but I just moved to Portland Oregon and I'm looking for some places thought to be haunted or experience paranormal activity that don't require taking a tour to do investigate. If anyone lives in this area, has lived here before, or know some history about PDX it'd be greatly appreciated if you could let me know. Portland has the most interesting, disturbing and sickening history in the Northwest because of slavery and shanghai'ing between the mid 1800's and right before WW II. I know there has to be some places here that experience unexplained phenomena. I've been doing some research online but the only thing listed are tours.

If I posted this in the wrong forum please just move it to the proper area! Thanks so much! :tu:

Also stories of the massive chandelier swinging for no reason, and this was a massive thing that you usually see in movies. Thanks for the help! yeah and I know a bit about Shadowlands....most of their info is based on folktale and not facts. Part of the reason why I wasn't too keen on using their resources. But I guess I will have to...sigh....

Thanks again Mr. Noah!

YEah, i did an investigation at one of the spots they had on there site. I did an entire weekend investigation and they were missing A LOT of the story. I simply emailed them what the staff of the place had said, and they said and i quote "Better get your facts straight before emailing us crap, Take us off your emailing list"

Guess they would rather have wrong information on their site.

My sister went to Lewis and Clark college for 4 years and noone said a word to me about any ghost stories, even when I stayed with her at her dorm. If there had been some phenomenal ghost story as reported, somebody would've told me about it just to spook me, lol.

Here's an old thread on the same topic. There's places listed there that aren't on that shadowlands list.

http://www.unexplained-mysteries.com/forum...amp;mode=linear

I had friends that experienced ghost type activities in the Burger King on Burnside, the Imbrie Farmstead and the Meier and Frank building. Might've been a different haunted thread but one of the buildings at PSU (Lincoln Hall?) was also purported to be haunted.

I so agree with you, I've been looking and all I could find were tours of peoples basements, blegh. If you happen to find A spot let me know, I am in dire straits to find spiritual to demonic activity somewhere in Portland. I already tried Cavalry Cemetery located on Burnside in the west hills; last night actually lol. Anyway, if you find a spot, hit me up at sesshomaru9771@yahoo.com

Hail to the Portland, OR person.

I used to live 90 miles north of there and found it a nice place...when it's not snowing or blazing hot. LOL

As for finding a place in PDX that is haunted, there are several sites out there that will list some places, however you must realize that some of these places are private property and the chances of really any of them being open to the public are very few.

If you want to check a few places, since it seems that you are close to the WA border, then I could REALLY tell ya a few places going north (even some places that were near me at the time).

there is a bar or it may be a resturant now on 175th and stark, it is shaped like a pyramid, I used to go there back in 2000 to wait for my friend to get off work. and I got to hang out when they were closeing down the bar. on 2 ocasions I saw things out of the corner of my eye that I couldn't explain. first thing I saw was pages on a jukebox being browsed (upper balcony)but no one was there, as soon as I looked directly at the jukebox it stopped. another was a shadow of a person moving on their upper balconywhen I told my friend about it he said stuff like this happens almost every night and that everyone has goten used to it. he also said he heard voices sometimes.this was my first and only experience and it has made a believer out of me.

Pretty darn inclusive list, I must say. Thanks to all for taking the time to compile the info from all the books and/or websites used as sources.Maybe I overlooked the name of the books and authors but I'f like to find them out to see if they, the authors, do one state by state. Thanks.

The reason why you would hear horses in Tryon creek is because there is a horse trail there, along with an exercise ring for the animals. :P

I have no idea why someone would put that in, maybe they were visiting and didn't know about the horse trails.

I'm from Salem myself, and I'm forever searching for places to go to. I agree, sadly, Shadowlands is pretty much all urban legend and myth. It's hard to tell what is fact and fiction. I know the Elsinore Theater in downtown Salem has somethingas I've felt it. However I'm not that experienced about Portland sadly. Let me know if you discover anything? =)

Portland - Kennelworth park - said to be a young girl was raped and killed there, often walking in the park at night you can hear trying to scream or see her walking around the area.

I used to live one house away from here. I never heard screams, but I would occasionally hear something like struggling late at night, between 11 pm and midnight (when I was walking by on my way home from work). Neighbors never reported screams either, but of sounds similar to the ones I have heard. I have no idea what it was, but I lived in the area for two years and it always seemed to happen in late summer more often than other times.

I moved to Langlois,Oregon a little over a year ago....Working in Coos Bay.

Before I moved here ( my family lives in Port Orfard , have for 25 years , they left me in Sparks ,Nevada to grow up on my own )I had seen a site , and I looked at it a lot...It was something like " Oregon x "....It had some pretty cool places to go check out , but for the life of me , I can not find it now...It was a paranormal site for the Oregon Coast....If I find it , I will post it....Come by for a world famous hot dog sometime :)

Oh , for you :

THIS IS WHAT JEFF FOXWORTHY HAS TO SAY ABOUT 'LIVING IN OREGON' . .

If you design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a 2 layers of clothes or under a raincoat, you live in Oregon.

If driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with snow and ice, you live in Oregon.

If you know all 4 seasons: almost winter, winter, still winter, and road construction, you live in Oregon.

If you feel guilty throwing aluminum cans or paper in the trash, you live in Oregon.

If you know more than 10 ways to order coffee, you live in Oregon.

If you know more people who own boats than air conditioners, you live in Oregon.

If you stand on a deserted corner in the rain waiting for the "Walk" signal, you live in Oregon.

If you consider that if it has no snow or has not recently erupted, it is not a real mountain, you live in Oregon.

If you can taste the difference between Starbucks, Seattle's Best, and Dutch Bros, you live in Oregon.

If you know the difference between Chinook, Coho and Sockeye salmon, you live in Oregon.

If you know how to pronounce Sequim, Puyallup, Clatskanie, Issaquah, Oregon, Umpqua, Yakima and Willamette, you live in Oregon.

If you have actually used your mountain bike on a mountain, you live in Oregon.

If you think people who use umbrellas are either wimps or tourists, you live in Oregon.

If you buy new sunglasses every year, because you cannot find the old ones after such a long time, you live in Oregon.

O , I am finding some interesting links , I will share them here for you....Pm me , I might even be interested in some of them.....

http://www.beachconnection.net/news/ghost1006_0174.htm

This one is so-so....although the Oregon Vortex is listed there , and that place is a trip for sure...Little quote below on it..... http://www.ghostsandcritters.com/oregonghosts.html

"Even skeptics would enjoy a visit to the Oregon Vortex to try and "discover" the secrets of some of the visual effects or explain the apparent expansion and contraction of people when entering the vortex. I have practiced with optical illusions myself over time, but if all of this is a trick, I don't see how it was done. If someone has an explanation, I would be interested in seeing how it was done myself.

Another interesting note about the Oregon Vortex, it is haunted. Several visitors to the vortex have seen Lister standing at the top of the sloping floor of the old log cabin. He is usually seen resting against the wall, laughing and plucking his eyebrow. The visitors have asked the guide the identity of the man who somehow got ahead of the tour. One tour guide looked inside and recognized Lister from an old photograph. After the quick look, Lister disappeared. When the other tour guides have looked inside the cabin, there was no one there. Anyone leaving the cabin by the back door would have been seen."

Portland - LOTUS-nightclub downtown - Reports of something VERY creepy in the basement - has scared employees so badly, they refuse to talk about it. a bartender, alone after closing had finished cleaning the bar-i.e. no glasses were left out, etc. and went downstairs-to the creepy basement?-and heard a CO2 canister activate. A very distinct sound and not made when not in use-that is to say there is no pressure release on CO2 cylinders. Upon coming back upstairs the bartender found an upside-down shot glass on the bar.

How could the upstairs of the Lotus Cardroom not be haunted? The building used to be a hotel but now the ground floor is a bar (with legal gambling due to it being grandfathered in) and the upstairs appears to be abandoned. It looks creepy from the street.

for what it's worth, i highly highly advise against going to the shanghai tunnels. i finally made it on one of their tours after two years of wanting to go and it was such a huge disappointment. the group is huge, 50 people then you split up into two groups...the tour guide speaks so quietly you can barely hear him, you're all squished into tiny tunnels and can barely see anything. it's not at all the tunnels i expected, it is basically a little 'u' shape under some extremely loud bars.

i don't mean to sound negative or mean, i read the reviews only after i went and wish i would have read them before. it is a major letdown.

oh yeah, absolutely. i'm glad you loved it so much! i think i was just disappointed that i didn't see anything, hear anything or feel anything. i wasn't expecting it but i knew with such a large group and so much noise, that the chances were very slim. it is incredibly rich in history though, that part of the tour definitely doesn't disappoint.

The freaking Catacombs, those are super, super scary. Ive been down there, and I got such bad feelings from going there that I had to leave. I live about an hour away from portland, and Ive never gone back to there. Also, I know its not in portland, but Cloudcap Inn on Mt. Hood and Tillyjane campsite are the most haunted places ive been. Ive seen a lady walking around in 1900's attire around 2 in the morning on several occasions.

Were you with your friend Jack Daniels at the time?

for what it's worth, i highly highly advise against going to the shanghai tunnels. i finally made it on one of their tours after two years of wanting to go and it was such a huge disappointment.

It's not as good as the Seattle Underground. Those tunnels go quite a ways and are still in some degree of use.
