Born in the Wrong Time Period

Ug, I feel like this all the damn time. I just feel like I should have been around the turn of the century, like 1900-1940's. I just want to grow my own food, raise my own meat, but I still like modern conveniences. I have a garden out back that provides some food but not as much as my space allows, I am starting to buy beef and bison from local farmers, and I stay away from anything processed in favor of making it myself. My friends look at me like I have a third eye most of the time for stuff that I do. You guys make me feel less weird.

Possibly memories from previous past lives? I've often felt quite out-of-place and felt like I belonged somewhere else. I once woke up and was confused and disoriented by my room - not understanding where I was, though I had lived there for 4 years. I kept feeling like home was far away and I'd soon wake up and be there again. Quite a few Decembers ago I even had an extremely vivid dream of being in a house which I just knew was in Poland. I was a child, wearing a nightgown, coming down a large, curved staircase in front of a fireplace with a large Christmas tree in front of it. Other people were there, mostly kids (about 4-5 of them) who I knew were my brothers and sisters and a man I knew was my father, none of whom noticed my presence. When I woke up, I missed it so much I cried. I can still see it clearly and still miss them, even though I never interacted with them. I've briefly thought about it possibly being a memory. I still feel like I belong there.

As mess up as I am it would have been nice to have been born some time in the future when they have cured this darn illness I have. Back in time and if I was healthy I think the Neolithic time might be nice.

I get that too. Wherever I've lived I've always felt as though I'm not supposed to be living there, and that I should be somewhere else, but I don't know where. It's really unsettling sometimes.

Me also. Though I wonder why so many people see the past as the situation they belong in? The past was once the present. Some of the people replying in this thread have wished for being born in decades I've lived through, which didn't seem especially wonderful when they were the present.

Due to an illness I have, i'm happy to be in a time period where they have more civilized ways of dealing with it, but i've always liked the days when you grew your own food, made your own clothes, and lived in a small town. Maybe sometime in the 1800s.

I've always liked the clothes from Medieval times, too.

I think I should be where everyone was nice. To each other & wasn't so mean & rude. Heck, I'm nice to mean people. Or it could be how I was raised. O_o;

You guys make me feel less weird.

Your welcome. And don't worry about it. ^^; You'll get used to it.

I agree, people make the difference, that's how I feel about where I should be. I think it's probably not upbringing. So many people get good upbringings that fail to make them good natured. While others get negative upbringings yet still turn out nicer than their peers.

In theory, you could do those things now. Even medieval clothing, organizations like the SCA enjoy themselves that way.

Thanks. Plus, I've always been "nice" to people. I've met in my past lives. Guess it's a trait in me. ^_^

One of the weird things about getting older is that history records decades that you lived through in a way that's drastically different from your memories. Sometimes I wonder why various decades are remembered the way that they are.

I'm happy to be living now, with the advantages of modern medicine. Sometimes I think I would have enjoyed being a sailor back in the 18th century (if I'd been a guy and in great health). It would combine travelling with living communally.

Do you guys think it's possible it's because of your past lives? May be wvgirl1979 was that child she had a dream about in one of her past lives...

I always felt (for certain), that I was supposed to be born at a different time but somehow a mistake was made and I was born too late.

I've had an extremely strong attachment to the early 20th century, around 1905-1935. I hate living in the 21st century, it's just not for me.

Same here. But I love the tech that this century has to give. ^^;;

Edit: Also. I'm very lady-like. I like things that are for girls & some things for boys. And half the time I want to wear big puff dresses. That they used to wear in the middle ages.

To me its always seemed like a "the grass is greener on the other side" kind of thing. Ive always felt that I would rather be born in a futuristic scenario, 10,000 years past today, assuming we actually advanced that far and didnt kill ourselves.

But it probobly wouldnt be any better.

Don't worry, your feeling isn't stupid. It's human. Period. We're all humans, we are the same kind of animals that we were 100, or even 1000 years ago. There really is something f'd up about our time period right now.

A) We as humans have never been so fricken weak in our entire lives. 70 years ago, people knew how to fix their own cars! Toasters worked forever, and we didn't have half as much radiation flowing through our brains as we do now (Don't quote me, I'm probably exaggerating)- We can't make our own fire, we can't make our own food, we can't hunt, make our own clothes, can't survive if the power goes out. We're all doomed, lets face is. A world sitting ontop of a dependence like Oil and electricity is very much bound for downfall very very soon.

B)You were told by the television to be a multi-tasking cook, provider, and much much more as a woman. It used to be that a woman could stay home and laze around in her house coat to her hearts desire (I'd personally not mind sitting on my butt all day, as opposed to hauling my ass to work every morning), her husband could go to work, bring home enough money to feed, clothe, and give recreation to the family, and still have $$ left over. The government has taken advantage of the female worker so much now that it is nearly impossible for middle class families to bring in $$ with both parents working! We are definitely living in a screwed up time.

C) Our DNA is composed of so much material that originates from time periods we cannot even begin to comprehend. We are all pre-historic creatures living in a time period foreign to us. No wonder so many people are losing their minds. Homo Sapien Sapien was not born go to school with books, and know what is going on in every country of our globalized culture... Homo Sapien Sapien woman is supposed to (hahahaha) take advantage of her working husband, by 1)Not having to work 2)Having so much more time for much more fun activities like traveling and playing with her kids, and reading, studying, writing books, getting famous...

I will quote my mother now "I'd like to know which F@#$ing woman decided that women should work... she destroyed my opportunity to be productive."

-Thank you.

It's so easy to say and wish to be born in another time and place in the past whether it's Ancient Egypt, Ancient Ireland, the Medieval era, or the Victorian era because of Romanticism fueled by books, Hollywood movies, and pop culture. Have any of you ever stopped to think about how how it would be like to REALLY be a person living in the Middle Ages or the Victorian Era? Sure, most of us don't like this fast-paced world of industry, commercialism, warfare, and terrorism but would you rather be a prostitute or a coal miner during 1800's England?

Let's say you long for the days of the Medieval, where chivalry reigned, where Kings were noble, and the dresses were pretty. Let's look at the other side - the HORRIBLE HISTORY side. Women were worth a bit more than livestock. Sure, there were people that respected these women and quite a few were notable historical figures of their time (but even Joan of Arc was burned at the stake for wearing men's clothes even after all that she did for France) but most peasant women were forced to work, bear children, work some more, and if they were lucky, they weren't condemn as witches. If you were a noble woman, you too, had to bear children as soon as you were married off most likely to people you don't love to tie family allegiances, land, or other things. Not the Middle Ages, but Lucrezia Borgia of the Renassiance was married off three times just for political reasons with her first marriage when she was thirteen. Hardly enough time for her to enjoy life and it's pleasures. Men didn't have it praticulary easy either, but for different reasons. Young nobles and peasants went off to fight in the Crusades for honor and God and came back home with missing limbs and terrors. Talking about medicine, the cures were insane. You can easily die from an ingrown toenail since the local doctor will reccomend you drink gold powder or bathe in water by moonlight. Or you can go to the local midwife or herb woman if she wasn't burned for being a witch first...hardly the beautiful time of silks, knights in shining armor, and peasants singing in the sun as they sow wheat. Sure, I'd love to live in the Middle Ages Hollywood style but in the actual Middle Ages? I'd be frightened to.

And the Victorian Era? Yes, the corsets were pretty, I love the houses, the jewelry, the "gothicism" of mourning, I love the beautiful images that books have given me, but it's not an era I'd want to grow up in. Women were still not respected, few could go to college, and medicine wasn't exactly up to par either. Prostitutes roamed the streets of White Chapel, some dying from syphillis and some who wonder if they'll make it till morning. Many started working in factories, in the coal mines, and life was just plain miserable. I wouldn't praticularly mind being a rich Lady riding a beautiful black horse while in my blood red gown with a lacy steel-boned black corset (drool) but how real is this fantasy if I were to live in England during the Victorian Era?

I like to sit back and imagine how it'd be like to live in the Middle Ages of my dreams, or to be a painter during the Renassiance. Or as a beautiful Egyptian queen ruling over her people with an equally handsome Pharaoh. But when I start seeing the reality of how it was like to actually live back then, I'm glad I was born now (I was borned in the mid 80's, enjoyed the 90's with passion, and find the 2000's interesting)...I don't exactly wish to be born in the future since I have dystopia-phobia and I can see some nut job trying to create a perfect yet incredibly messed up world in the future.

Edited by it's me!

I definitely feel like that. I would have like to have been born anywhere in the range of 1000-1700 AD I think... When there was still a lot of mystery left in the world and still a lot of unknown and unpopulated places. I guess it's just the call of adventure that would appeal to me, back when the world was still ripe with mystery. Maybe if I actually were born then, it would be different than I thought, although it's just an interesting notion.

Fox, you gotta know buddy, I feel for you. I gotta tell you you were born way to late, you needed to be working for the Bureau in the late 1920s through 1946. That would be the best time for a man of your talets.
