IMO, and no offense kid.. I'd keep as far away from Henderson County. Athens is Henderson County's heart. No one likes Henderson County, unless of course; if they have grown up with it when the town was setting it's roots. Personally, if you think if Dallas is bad,it's twice as bad in Athens... most of the cops are rejected from Dallas, come here... of course they're crooked which is why they are rejects. Better have a well known and very respectable name to get reliable health care with in Athens, and personally out of everyone I know, we rather go to Tyler if we need serious help besides needing a prescription wrote for a common antibiotic. After all, who really wants to go to ANY hospital with simple cold symptoms and die a week later (known to happen more than a "few" times mind you.) Don't plan on finding a lawyer who doesn't have a hidden agenda in case if you ever need one, my suggestions are *go to a NEW lawyer within the town to get some decent help unless if you have a lot ( I mean A LOT) of money to waste on simple basic laws, once again of course unless if you have a well respected and highly valuable name. Athens is beautiful, Athens also has a loop, in which... again IMO... didn't need it wasted use of tax dollars. I've met a lot of people who've moved here from Dallas, and not many of them care about Athens.

I've lived in DFW briefly and spent a lot of time there growing up as my Grandparents lived in east Dallas, having moved there from the Queen City area. We lived in a suburb of Kansas City for a long time when I was a kid and I loved Dallas compared to KC. Today's Dallas is certainly different from the one I knew in the 60's and 70's though. It hasn't changed for the better, with the exception of Cabela's and Bass Pro (which KC also has). I have a good friend who lives outside Henderson (the town itself). If I was going to move around there I'd probably choose the county north of there (Van Zandt) as that is where my ancestor is buried. I might have to fight my wife though, who LOVES the area around Jefferson. As an aside, we were through Tyler last summer and stopped at Gander Mountain. Nice store. I love Texas but it is noticeably more crowded than it was when I was a boy. I certainly would consider your thoughts on the area were I seriously considering moving.

B) Of course Texas is growing.Right in the area i live in,they are building homes like crazy and traffic is bad around here. Our local school district,Schertz-Cibolo -Universal City ISD is going to build two new elementaries and an intermediate school due to all the growth.San Antonio which is our neighbor to the west is also growing.Lot of people from California are moving here.

Never been to Athens ,Texas. If there is any satanic stuff going on there or in San Antonio for that matter, all is kept pretty hush hush.

Will have to do a search for Fuller Park out of curiosity.

Yeah I liked it better around here when the rabbits and deer were running around.

Lived in Van Zandt county for about a year it was nice, very calm feel to where we was which was right outside of Mabank, if you've lived in henderson county for a long while you certainly do feel like you've "got away" from the hassles of it. It's just a bad county. <3 Gander Mountain just wish i had money for it :w00t: I agree with Texas becoming noticeably more crowded. Henderson (the town) is a very beautifull place and decent sized it seems. Hubby used to work over there I loved going to visit.

Well if that is true about the cops in Athens then prove it. My question to you, SavvyWitch, is why do you think the cops are crooked? Which side of the law do you play on? It seems in my experience if you have been doin something that is not so legal and had to deal with the cops then the cops are always crooked or trying to bust you for something you "didn't do". But if your on the up and up and following the letter of the law then they are ok.

Now as far as the lawyers...well your about right. And health care well lets just say I wont go out there. But aint this true in most places?

First off, its not unusual for the Police to be dirty around that area... been going on for years. I do not know if they are Dallas rejects, I just know the high turn around rate on Police Chiefs in many of the cities in that area.

As for Fullers Park, its a damn scary place I tell ya. Hauntings, cars stopping and not starting, orbs, headless horsemen, UFO sightings, mysterious old woman with a lamp at your car window, bumps in the night... all a bunch of horse crap in my opinion. At least for that area it is. I am a believer in some and will give credit where credit is due, but a majority of these stories were passed down from Senior to Freshman like a School fight song. Each year someone claims to have seen ro done what someone the year before did. Urban Legends... that is all they are.

NOW, as for the Satanists... they scare the hell out of me. The same way I would be scared if I found out I had a neighbor on the FBI Top Ten most wanted list. They existed back when I was in High School, and they probably do now. These people are not groups of teens hell bent on living out a Slayer song either. They are the real deal. I had a shop teacher who updated us after listening to our Urban Legends and plans to go check it out. Either he lived close by, or he just passed close by to the area of Fuller's Park. His car broke down and he took off on foot to the direction of the Country Club taking short cuts where possible. (Let me say here that the car broke down due to Mechanical failure... not from honking twice and flashing your lights to summon a being from beyond." Anyhoo, during one of his short cuts he catches sight of the fire and made his way toward it. He got close enough top see your ever popular black robed figures. It was enough to make turn back to the road he ventured off of. What he did notice was that there were a lot of them. Some that were standing were hump backed as if in an elderly way... not like a slouchy poor postured kid. I reckon he made his way home without a problem because he lived to tell the tale.

In my own opinion, I believe the Satanist (or maybe some other faith perhaps) are some of the older and well-to-do sorts of Athens. More than one urban legend was passed around about being followed by black vehicles when nosing in certain areas. That sounds more along the lines of a crock also, I believe they just wanna do their thing and be left alone. They have obviously explored their options enough to know what they are doing. Maybe it is this way... a sort of secret society that pulls in the upscale and powerful. It would make more sense than Funky Monkeys screaming and doing a disappearing act with The Fuller family scooting around and getting p***ed about the upkeep. Monkeys... one too many times watching Wizard of Oz.

Look for the stories and legends around Goshen Cemetery also. That place had its fair share of tales also. Should be close to the Eustace area which is not far from Athens. In High School, we would go out there to drink. Usually we were greeted with a lot of knocked over tombstones We would set them back up in an effort to not get blamed. There was a small house that an old woman with a lamp was supposed to come out of if you honked and flashed your lights. Being as adventurous as we were (and with a little liquid courage) we found out it was nothing but a crapper .

That is my two cents... Leave the change!

ombiezay,

I was raised in Athens, my father was raised in Athens, and his mother was raised in Athens. Needless to say I know a few things but none of which I am going to reveal at the moment.

I will say that this has been a story that has traveled around a long time. I agree with the fact that every year that someone has a new version. Some facts are correct and others seem to not be something I know about. Do not know where the people are getting the info. But I guess it makes a great story.

Check out this website, good photo of the Fuller Gravestone etc..

By the way there is talk of tunnels under the park, what are the five points that the pentegram goes to, are they houses or stores, etc?

If you look at the park from Google Earth is there a simple way of plotting the so called pentegram tunnels?

I re-read our postings just now and don't believe I thanked you enough earlier. Thanks again as I can see you went to some trouble to warn me of the happenings in Henderson County and Athens in particular. I appreciate it. If we ever re-locate down Texas-way, I doubt we'll settle there due to your warnings. Thanks again.

is Henderson any worse than Anderson county?

I always thought Tyler was a nice town

I grew up in Athens, went to High School in the early 80's. First I want to reply to the person that wrote about Todd Tolbert. Todd was my husband's best friend and he was the best man at my wedding. He was also my best friend's casual boyfriend. The night Todd died was January 1 just after midnight. We had all been together at a little pool hall bringing in the New Year. We needed more beer and Todd and Will took the job of going to Caney City to get the beer. He first took my best friend home because her mom wanted her home just after midnight, and that probably saved her life. Todd and my husband were both into fast cars and Todd was coming back into Athens on highway 31 when his tie rod broke which caused him to loose control of his car. He was going fast and flew high enough to shear a telephone or electric pole midway. Will was thrown clear and survived. Todd died at the scene. We heard of the crash immediately and went to the scene which was directly across from what use to be the old Trail Drive In. They had a white sheet over him and he was still in the driver's seat. We were devastated as you can imagine. It fell on my husband and I to tell Todd's other best friend Rocky and to tell my best friend that he had just dropped off at home about an hour earlier. I admit that after Todd's death we did start hearing a lot of rumors about satanic rituals, but we never heard that Todd was an active part of this. If fact we visited two sites in Athens that have or had very large stone pentagrams. One was at the Country Club and we were told that a few days before Todd's death, that Todd and some of his friends were standing on each point of the pentagram, all except Todd because there was not another point, the points were all taken. And the assumption was that this was going to be bad for Todd in some way. There were a lot of rumors going on at that time. I was only 17 and it was in 1982 so I really don't remember all the rumors. As for Fuller's Park, I have been there on many occasions at night. Teenagers in the area do know of the urban legend and like to go out there at night. I never had a supernatural type experience there, but I do remember that it was eerie. The tombstones were turned over and the huge chain was still there. I saw the picture posted at the link and it pretty much looks the same as it did in the early 80's. I left Athens in 1984 and have never lived there again although I do go back to Malakoff because I have family and friends there, but I usually take the loop around Athens. In the early 80's and in just a few years I lost 26 friends to various accidents and have lost many more in the years after that. Honestly, all of the deaths are the reason I do not want to live in Athens ever again, I felt like, well this may be silly but I felt like Athens was cursed or that we as a group were cursed and that if I didn't leave I might be next. Although, the dead are 99% male and I am female, which probably means nothing except that the males took more risks. I still have good friends that are males that live there and it surprises me even now that they remain alive, I am so glad they are alive. I never could put my finger on the unease Athens held for me or if my friends deaths were just accidents or something darker. I like to think it was all just really bad luck. I can add one thing about the police around there. This is also rumor and has never been proven, but I have had a few friends end up dead after a run in with police in Athens. Probably a coincidence.

I apologize I was wrong about the fact that Will was in the car with Todd when Todd was killed, it was indeed Mark Shaffer. The car was a red Ford Comet that Todd had built in his HS shop class. I am hearing that he never worked at the Country Club, but this is not proven yet.

ya'll mention Fullers Park in several discussions about Athens.I have lined in Athens 5 years and I never heard of Fullers Park before but there is a cementary between Athens and Murchison I think it is called Ash Cementary. There was this one time my truck broke down and I had to walk past that cementary. In a corner of the cementar by the highway there was several knives stuck in a tree and they all had fresh blood on them. Two weeks later I rented a house between Murchison andBen Wheeler and in one of the bedroom closets there was 11 or 12 black hooded robes and 12 double edged knives that were blood stained and had human skull pictures engraved in the handle just like the ones in Ash Cementary. In the other bedroom there was a giant dark maroonish blackish stain [/font]on the wall that never would come off. where is fullers park?

I was born in Athens, Texas in 1970, Ive always these stories about fullers park and the monkey cages, but never really believed them, until one night (actually it was early, early morning, myself, my brother and a couple of friends went there. We passed the Fullers tombstones and went deep inside, there we saw the cages, the burning tree and lookout spots placed high in some of the other trees. We did not run into anyone there (thank God), but it was obvious somehting was going on with the buring tree and the cages. We could feel a drastic sense of evil doing and when we went home and i told my mother ( this was around 1994 or so, i was in my early twenties then), she was furious with the fact we went there and told us not even the cops would go out there. My mother also grew up in the Athens area and this was even going on when she was groing up. We want to go back again, theres something about it thats beckoning to us, but will only do so with a lot of loaded weapons (for self defense only). When and if i go back, i will post everything that happens right here.

Athens Cults/Satanist

THis is a link to other discussions on this topic with many stories from the locals !

http://www.network54.com/Forum/533567/mess...+The+Wall+Story

Fuller Park originally featured an old petting zoo owned and run by Mr. and Mrs. Fuller, Mr. Fuller being at that time, a Southern Baptist Minister and Philanthropist.

He also practiced as a family physician and veterinarian, from what I know of what has been told of him by older people, in the area.

Thus, there existed the old monkey cages, old-timey wrought-iron-girdered fences, etc., which, of course, attracts young people to it.

One of the reasons that people (in the distant past) have made this place an Icon of Athens legend over the past hundred or so years is because it was rumored that Mrs. Fuller had a miscarriage and committed suicide.

She has even been called a witch for it, no doubt by God-Fearing members of the Church.

As to whether that is actually historical fact, I have never known, or spoken to any older person that claimed that this was true & some of my mother's older relatives actually knew some of their descendants.

However, as far back as when I first moved here as a kid, I can remember of it being spoken of, especially around this time of year, obviously.

Throughout the years, it has become one of the most visited places (esp. just before and after midnight) over the past 50 years or so.

During the outlandish and overblown eighties, there was a cult (whether satanic or not is unknown, but rumored as such) that was apparently into things like witchcraft and the like who practiced sacrificial rites with animals of all kinds (chickens, dogs, cats, pigs, goats, etc.) and were sometimes left at the site (and others around Athens - under Monkey bridge, for one) for people to discover.

Also, their graves were desecrated & the actual bodies of the Fullers themselves were exhumed and relocated to an old cemetery of which I can't remember the name of, however.

Another hot spot of misdeed just east of Athens off of Hwy 175 is Beck's Chapel.

First of all. I grew up in Wills Point...close to Athens....There is a college campus in athens and in near by palestine...also lotsa "college activities" go one there....im not 100% but since my friends and i always go to visit the "haunted" places and I haven't EVER heard of it i doubt it's real. However if you are an east texan....Check out Goat mans bridge, Clarks Ferry in Grand Saline, the Burning Bus in Wills point. There is a cemetary out there named after a girl that was killed by her father and the cemetary is sooooo spooky, crybaby well also Grand Saline....and so much more.

I was at fullers park yesterday and i have lived in athens for 17 years and when i got there everything was normal. I just went for a walk a like one acre in the woods was like 30 degrees colder than anywhere else and on my way back i looked at the grtave site and mr. fullers dead stone had been totally turned around and laid on the ground... i brought some friends out there to try and lift it back up but it was way to heavy to even budge. If anyone has something to say about that speak up...

I grew up in Athens. Fullers Park was always where the kids went either drunk or on drugs it was really cool to go out there at night.

I have had a couple of encounters with ghost but not there it is spooky even during the day but to me its all urban legend.

Fullers park is past the back part of the Cain Center.

It was the 1980's that it was pretty popular those were the days

It seems in my experience if you have been doin something that is not so legal and had to deal with the cops then the cops are always crooked or trying to bust you for something you "didn't do". But if your on the up and up and following the letter of the law then they are ok.

Now as far as the lawyers...well your about right. And health care well lets just say I wont go out there. But aint this true in most places?

About the cops in Athens I left there in 1997 and moved to ol Speeder Creek and the reason I did is because of the cops. I was seperated from my then husband who stalked me and the cops would never help me cause in Texas we are still man and wife yet he would kick my butt and i would fight back as best as I could yet They would threaten to take me in for defending myself.

Athens cops today I have no problem with they have always been resepectful but the ones back in eary 90's were awful except for Bettencourt he was cool god rest his soul.

To the Ex that was evil cancer got even with him

Welcome to UM joshm!

FULLER PARK does exist...... http://www.flickr.com/photos/special/5365690/ ..... :tu: ... enjoy.

Fuller Park has over 200 years of witchcraft.

something else interesting:

Mr Fuller's tombstone reads "for twenty five years Pastor of Athens Baptist Church" yet that church has no record of him having been Pastor. In fact, there's no record of the Fullers in any athens historical document.

"Everyone here knows that Athens lies in the beltbuckle of the Baptist belt. But how many of you know its roots are anchored in Witchery 2 centuries old?Over these 200 years it has been layered with generation upon generation of witchcraft that has left many marks upon our city. And a curse that has yet to be lifted.Over time thier has come to be 5 stone markers that from an aerial view marks the points of a pentagram. The stones are unlike any rock found anywhere near Athens and are a mystery in and of themselves.Though Penecostal and Baptist churches line our streets,Magic and witchery prevails.Fuller Park bears one of these stones and it has been said that the Fullers themselves laid it with thier own hands.

The stone in Fuller Park marks the entrance to the tunnels that run underground connecting the points of the pentagram. The Fullers originally built the park for the wealthy citizens to enjoy and even installed monkey cages to amuse the rich.It is said that the Fullers haunt the park to this day, disgusted with the way the park has fallen to disarray and neglect.Thier labor of love forsaken by the future generations. So they walk the park as specters and will not rest untill the park is restored to its former glory. It is also said that whjen the moon is rising full, like tonight, you can hear the freed monkeys running wild and screeching for the Fullers to feed them. You can hear them, but never see them."

"What you dont hear about are the tunnels and the horrific incident that they housed. How in the early 40's a small band of religious zealots forced a group of people that were known to witches into the tunnel and locked them in the tunnels to perish of starvation.Once they were dead they returned to cleanse the tunnels by fire. What they didnt know was not all of the coven was contained inside the tunnels.Three men remained outside the tunnels and were unsuspected of thier witchery. These men were very prominent in society. One was a Truant Officer, one a Masonite and another a well known carpenter. These men were incensed by the treachery of these "Men of God".They grouped together and began compliling research on evocation and worked the rest of thier natural lives digging up arcane rituals. They passed this all down to the next generation until in the early 80's it came down to a young man named Todd Talbert. He finished the work the men had started and came up with the end rite to be preformed.Todd Tolbert was a handsome popular man of 20 who had a steady job as a groundskeeper at the Country Club.He was also well known as a devout Satanist. He took magic to its darkest place. In 1982 Tood preformed the ritual in his workshed at the Country Club.An eerie red glow oozed between the slats of the makeshift door to the workshop. One by one he drew out the souls of the poor perished people of the tunnels and greeted them with a sneering smile. He set them forth to punish the ancestors of those responsible for thier deaths. Many of whom didnt even know what thier forefathers had done. One by one the ancestors died or were commited to the local nut house."

"One week later,on Halloween, Todd Talbert was killed in a car wreck on monkey road. The passenger thrown clear through the passenger side window." s The old lady finished. It was then a movement by the old oak caught her eye.

"Todd,is that you?" she called out

"Of course Mother, who else" a voice replied from behind the group.

Dude your crazy Todd Tolbert died on new years eve 1980 or 81

Check out this website, good photo of the Fuller Gravestone etc..

<a href=" Fuller Park (urban legend) target="_blank"> Fuller Park (urban legend) <img src="http://www.unexplained-mysteries.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/alien.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":alien:" border="0" alt="alien.gif" />

By the way there is talk of tunnels under the park, what are the five points that the pentegram goes to, are they houses or stores, etc?

If you look at the park from Google Earth is there a simple way of plotting the so called pentegram tunnels?

Supposedly one of the tunnel entrances is Fuller park; another is the Country Club; and the Courthouse is in the middle.

Apparently the Athens Daily Review did and article on Fuller Park in 1989 that included an interview with someone who drew them a map of the tunnel network. Maybe you could look up that story; it might help. Good luck.
