The first human inhabitants of the Easterisland are said to be sailors from Mayan-culture, but you really don't know for sure. What's fot sure though is that they managed to "kill" the entire island, which from the beginning had lots of giant palmtrees on it.

Easter Islanders are Polynesian, not Mayan.

Watch the movie Rapa Nui, it's really great and pretty informative about Easter island and the Polynesian culture, for a fictional movie.
