Massive 'alien' squid captured on video

Posted on Wednesday, 20 November, 2013 | Comment icon 29 comments

Little is known about these mysterious undersea giants. Image Credit: YouTube / Shell
A huge 26ft long magnapinna squid has been filmed by Shell from one of its submersible vehicles.
Like a creature from an alien planet or the war machines from HG Wells' War of the Worlds, the bizarrely proportioned cephalopod is like nothing else on Earth. Floating through the inky darkness, the creature looks like it's walking along on 26ft stilts.

Not a lot is known about these enigmatic animals. The first specimen was encountered off the coast of Brazil in 1988 by the submersible Nautile and there have been only a select few sightings since then during other deep sea expeditions.

Scientists believe that the squid either feed by dragging their massive tentacles along the seafloor or by trapping unsuspecting prey that tries to swim through them.

Awesome. Love the stiff first part of the tentacles, evolved into a squid but devolved I to feeding like a jellyfish.

I'm telling you guys, this is the start of something. First, they'll find things washed up on shore with human AND squid DNA. Next thing you know, it's a Squidulon/Octoid uprising. Keep calling me crazy. At least I, for one, will welcome our new cephalopodian overlords. Good to know servant.

And yet still no clear photos of a several hundred pound hominid who allegedly roams the entire of North America. I thought this one is pretty clear (in more ways then one).

So big oil companies have submersible vehicles that can travel 7000+ ft underwater? They have cameras that deep, that stay there. Theyre all over the Gulf, as far as I know. I assume they are other places.
