'Robo brain' could lead to a real-life Skynet

An 'Internet for robots' has been developed to provide a global knowledge resource for machines.
The concept is based on creating a convenient and easily-accessible resource for robots to rival what the conventional Internet does for human users.

If a household robot was required to wash the dishes for instance and didn't know how to do so, instead of having to be manually reprogrammed it could simply access this global online resource, download the process and then carry it out.

At present the 'Robo Brain' project learns much of its information from the traditional Internet and is currently processing more than 1 billion images, 120,000 YouTube videos and more than 100 million documents such as how-to books and instruction manuals.
All the information gathered by the system is then stored in a robot-friendly manner so that devices connecting to it can immediately access and understand the data.

While the concept has been praised by roboticists, some critics have argued that we may be giving the system a little too much control over how other machines behave.

The ability to pass commands to other robots through a complex communications network is certainly eerily reminiscent of the sentient 'Skynet' system featured in the Terminator film franchise.

I think in general, people need to stop with the AI doomsday scenarios. As human beings, we have a knack for assigning human-like qualities to inhuman organisms/intelligences. Perfect example is dogs: How many times have you heard someone explain their dogs behaviour in purely human parameters? The result is many, many misbehaved canines out there with severe forms of neurosis because we treat them like people: even though we know they are NOT human. They are animals with predatory instincts and 42 sharp teeth. The same concept applies with AI/robots. "WHAT IF THEY BECOME SELF AWARE AND SEE US... [More]

This so called "scenario" would absolutely 100% never come to be. The robots we have now are hardly a force to be worried about. And by the time we all have robots working for us there will be safeguards and even better technology to prevent such. IMO

I don't believe it's a case of "They will see us as a threat". I believe it's more of a case of "Humans are slow unproductive morons, it doesn't make sense to keep them around". It really has nothing to do with emotions but logical facts. AI will be able to create more AI who are smarter, faster, stronger and just better than humans. It would be illogical to keep us around. That is what machines work off of, logic. Yes but that still begs the question, WHY are we getting in the way? What end goal would a sentient machine come up with that could endanger humanity? It won't care about the planet... [More]

Here's something to think about, A philosophical zombie or p-zombie in the philosophy of mind and perception is a hypothetical being that is indistinguishable from a normal human being except in that it lacks conscious experience, qualia, or sentience.[1] For example, a philosophical zombie could be poked with a sharp object, and not feel any pain sensation, but yet, behave exactly as if it does feel pain (it may say "ouch" and recoil from the stimulus, or tell us that it is in intense pain). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philosophical_zombie A behavioral zombie is behaviorally indestinguishabl... Computers having the ability to learn seems a little dangerous somehow..... because they would never forget ANYTHING that they learned.. and they could learn an awful lot awfully fast. This "internet" for robots to search and acquire information would afford the computers CHOICES .. and making choices is Thinking? Once a machine can think, and make choices, it is making Decisions? .. the next logical step would be to take Action?

so basically most comments are about that they learn fast and will become very smart very fast. people fear them, please why would it annihilate humanity, does it have a reason to do so? because we're ruining the planet? why would it care about the planet when it can't physically interact with it, it has no sense of touch, smell, taste and purpose except for serving us and that's it. you people are to much into movies. and even if the planets ruined it can still survive, the organic lifeforms will die out. does it even have a purpose or a goal in it's artificial life?

Acquiring the capability to do something doesn't necessarily mean it should be done. Oppenheimer famously regretted his crucial role in creating the Atomic Bomb. #FoolishHumans

There was a story recently about a robot that, while operating, had a broken leg. Then within 2 minutes it had learned to operate with the broken leg. I think this demonstrates the robots ability cope and possibly learn as it goes. http://www.geek.com/science/robot-with-broken-leg-figures-out-how-to-walk-again-in-under-2-minutes-1600691/

Doom prophecies have always been a handy tool for those who are after power, or to dominate others people... But let us think for ourselfs instead of letting others think for us, who are mostly after something. What are the first goals of every living creature on this planet. First of all survival. reproduction is in fact a part of survival. Now, consciousness. We didnt invent it. It was given to us by nature. Imagen a child born without senses. That child will never develope a consciousness, it will never be aware of it surroundings. It will never think " poor me,I cannot communicate with thi... [More]
