At a mere 21.5 inches tall, Chandra Bahadur Dangi had long been recognized as the smallest man on Earth.
A resident of Nepal, Dangi earned his title back in 2012 when rumors of his tiny size prompted Guinness officials to travel to Kathmandu in the hope of finding someone who was shorter than existing record-holder Junrey Balawing of the Philippines who is 23.5 inches tall.
At 21.5 inches in height Dangi managed to secure the record and before long his unconventional size had made him famous around the world. Last year his popularity reached an all-time high when he posed in London alongside the world's tallest man - 8ft 3inch Sultan Kösen from Turkey.
"It's been a lifelong dream to travel and becoming a Guinness World Records title holder has enabled me to do that," he said at the time. "It makes me extremely proud to represent Nepal all around the world. I'm extremely humbled by the support I receive."
Sadly though Dangi became ill with pneumonia last week while visiting the Polynesian island of Samoa and passed away in the Intensive Care Unit at a hospital in Pago Pago at the age of 75.
"GWR would like to express its sincere and heartfelt condolences to Mr. Dangi's family in this difficult time," Guinness world Records said in a statement.
"He will be remembered forever as an iconic and extraordinary record holder."
