Blind woman regains sight after falling over

A 70-year-old woman who was left blinded by a car accident 21 years ago is now able to see again.
Mary Ann Franco went completely blind after suffering a spinal injury in a car accident over two decades ago and had long since given up on the possibility of ever being able to see again.

Her misfortune didn't end there either as more recently she suffered further injuries to her back following a fall at her South Florida home and needed an operation to alleviate the pain.

Incredibly though, upon awaking from the surgery, she discovered that the procedure had not only improved her back condition but had somehow managed to correct her vision as well.
"In the mornings, I get up, and I look out here and the sun is coming through the trees, and the beams [are] coming down," she said. "Oh, God, it's so wonderful to see."

Her doctors believe that the original accident may have partially blocked an artery in her spine which resulted in her going blind and that the recent surgery may have corrected the problem.

"I've never seen it, never heard of it," said neurosurgeon Dr John Afshar.

"When we give that extra amount of blood flow by unkinking the vessel, it could have re-established the blood flow, but this is all theoretical."

I'd fall and injure my neck if it would get rid of all the extra floaters and flashing lights in both my eyes I've had for the last several months.

So this latest accident and resultant spinal surgery enables her both now to see, and corrected color-blindness? Outstanding. Edit. Of course the remedial surgery had no directed goal of restoring eyesight... It was performed due to entirely different concerns. Yet this "sight-restorative" side-effect clearly happened. Hope the doc's are able to gain some clues as to "how" Something about increased blood flow is what I read as being medically speculated at this time.
