The 55-year-old, who ended up in court, insisted that he hadn't been attempting to travel through time.
The distinctive gull-winged vehicle, which was immortalized by the Back to the Future movies, is a popular collectable among enthusiasts including father-of-two Nigel Mills who had been traveling to work in his £22,000 DeLorean on Wednesday when he was caught by a police speed gun.

"I can honestly say I wasn't trying to time travel," he later told the Chelmsford Magistrates' Court. "It was at 11am on Sunday and the road was completely clear. I saw the guy with the speed gun and thought I better check my speed and low and behold, the letter turns up."

The iconic sports car was manufactured by John DeLorean's DeLorean Motor Company between 1981 and 1983 and was picked for use in the movies due its metallic, futuristic appearance.
"Ironically I was done for speeding in the car that doesn't get on the road much - I only drive it three or four times a year and did just 200 miles last year," said Mills.

"I'm a car fan and me and the rest of my family enjoyed the Back to the Future films."

Fortunately for him however the court hearing was ultimately thrown out due to a lack of evidence.

Considering John DeLoreans involvement on the GTOs mechanically this was such a let down. I was fortunate enough to have a good play with one of these as a friend built a near perfect replica of the time machine from bttf and I had to paint the bumpers and a lot of the molded parts for the time machine components. On a down side though he sold it this year and its gone from here in Australia to the UK. Currently building him a smokey and the bandit 77 trans am

The owner must have taken the Flux Capacitor out as he stated he wasn't trying to time travel.

Was surprised to read- the Delorean was doing 88mph... Kilometers per hour maybe...cool looking car, but what a lemon.

I wonder how he finds car parts for his vehicle.  It's such a 1980's car.

They will be (hopefully) putting them back into production. DMC Texas and DMC Florida(?) are seeking an appropriate supplier of engines but they carry a huge stock of parts, new & reconditioned. They will be able to make new cars under a new ruling in America which allows them to produce replica cars modelled on vehicles 25 years old or older.  Parts, at the moment, are plentiful.  I LOVE DeLOREANS! have loads of them(models) and read quite into the story of the rise and fall of john z delorean.  Did you know that the original presses for some of the body panels are in the Irish sea? Ap... [More]

the way i see it, if you're going to tether fish nets down with a car, why not do it with some style?

I stand corrected, the presses are tethering fishing nets down but not in the sea.    They are awesome cars, lemons, but so unique and thanks to the films, iconic.

I think most of them were made in the UK.

Yes in Ireland. Only because the factory land owners threw in a lump of cash to sweeten the deal. But when the company went bump it was taken over by an American legal firm and the huge stockpile of parts was shipped to America, DMC Texas was setup and they purchased the stock and are now making cars using original vin numbers but are also going to produce new cars(classic replicas) in the next year or so.

This reminds me of the warnings that doctors of the era issued regarding the new inventions known as automobiles, or horseless carriages.  There was a serious worry that the human body was not intended to move at the speeds attained by these new devices and use of them, could result in harm.
