Yellow-haired moth named after Donald Trump

A new species of tiny moth with a wingspan of just 0.4 inches has been named after the President-elect.
The insect, which inhabits parts of Mexico and Southern California, was discovered by biologist Vazrick Nazari, a researcher from Ottawa, in a collection at the Bohart Museum of Entomology.

Named Neopalpa donaldtrumpi, the moth has yellow and white scales on the top of its head which bear more than a passing resemblance to Trump's signature hairstyle.

Its habitat also happens to span the border between the United States and Mexico - a region that could end up being divided by a wall if the new President's plans are brought to fruition.
Outside of comparisons to its namesake, the new moth is also of particular interest to scientists and could help to raise awareness for biodiversity in the United States.

"Its distinctive wing pattern and its unique DNA bar code immediately flagged it as a new and undescribed species," said Nazari.

"I hope that the president will make conservation of such fragile ecosystems in the U.S. his top priority. These ecosystems still contain many undiscovered and undescribed species, and deserve to be protected for future generations."

Science does indeed lend itself to humor even if an individual does not believe in science.

Ahh..how sweet. Trump must be honoured they thought about him. No doubt this is not as big as the Trump Tower and soon to be Trump House and one day Trump airport..Trump space station..etc etc etc...

Yeah, and Russia was blamed for the cult of personality... Looks like today the toy cults of personality are blossoming around the globe. It's sorta so modern and stylish.

This isn't that surprising; plenty of presidents have species named after them. Obama currently has the most, with 10 scientific names honoring him.

I know, but I know, but isn't it a bit too early to honour him? Did he do anything outstanding, historically significant? Yes, I know. It's just that entomologist is a fan of him, nothing else. Like was in the case with Anophthalmus hitleri. Bad comparison, of course, but I think you'll excuse me for it. I just wanted to say, naming a living thing or an asteroid after a politician is a bit too light-minded.

Personally, I would never name a species after a politician either. I think specific names should be reserved for scientists or the animal's discoverer.
