Mystery bang rocks Tauranga, New Zealand

An extremely loud bang managed to wake up half the city when it shook houses at 3am on Sunday morning.
Described by some witnesses as a "sonic boom", the tremendous bang was widely reported by residents after it shook windows and upset pets across Tauranga.

"The house rattled, it was extremely loud, almost like it was in my backyard," said Brookfield resident Roderick Davison who recalled how the noise had woken him up in the middle of the night.
The local Tauranga Weather Facebook group ended up swamped with people asking about the incident with some speculating that it could have been a meteor or some sort of weapons test.

According to MetService meteorologist Peter Little however, the noise was most likely the result of a nearby thunderstorm and in particular, a triple lightning strike that had caused a single loud boom.

"It shocked a lot of people out of bed and created some mystery because there was just the one bang," he said. "But it's not uncommon for thunderstorms."

ive experienced this, one loud thunder boom during a storm, not a rumble, instead a short boom. it was the only thunder during the entire storm.

Thunder 'rumbles' because it's generated all along the path of the lightning bolt, and the sound reaches you from more-or-less distant parts of the path spread out over time. If the path's square on to your position, it can all arrive at the same time with a considerable thump.

I was looking out a window when a bolt hit a tree about 20 ft away. It's the loudest sound I've ever heard.

I saw a tree hit around 100 feet from where I was standing. For a second I was living life inside of a light bulb. Simply amazing.

I always thought these mysterious sounds could be coming  from the oceans, that travel, the booms and bangs of the Antarctica  breaking up. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_unexplained_sounds
