This story was submitted to the site by Bill S from California, United States.
It was late Sunday morning early Sept 1961 I was working the day shift for the sheriff's office looking forward to an uneventful day that usually goes with Sunday. It was deer season and most of our problems would be out in the woods, the other deputy was drinking coffee when the phone rang and I answered. The first thing I hear was "I'm not drunk so please don't hang up". He said he was at a bar and they were laughing at him - the man was obviously upset - I invited him to come in and make a report. I watched him enter the front office, about thirty and outside of the nervousness everything appeared normal. He took a seat and began.
"This morning I drove around hoping to see some sign of a buck, I come to the clearing and stopped getting out of my car and climbed a huge rock for a better view. On one end the ground sloped up the side so it was easy to climb. I looked around for a few minutes saw nothing and came back down. I was about to reenter my car when the rock I had been standing on exploded."
Whoa, hold it what do you mean exploded?
"I mean the rock blew up."
Just how big was this rock?
"30 feet by maybe 25 feet high."
He was more confident now that he had gotten past the exploding rock part. I filled out a report and headed out. I arrived at the clearing in less that an hour later and I saw no evidence of an exploding rock. The rock was there alright just about the dimensions I had written in my report. I begin to think I had been had until I got to the side facing away from the clearing. The face of the rock was smooth and looked like it had been scalded, the surface was fresh and not exposed to the elements. At the base of the rock was dark grey sand. I could see no deep marks on the rock when something had struck it, just that 10x12 place where it had been almost polished.
The trees on that side of the rock were pine standing about 10 feet high - the surprise they were all sheared off at about 4" high. The path of the sheared trees started small and the fanned out. I asked the dispatcher to contact Stead AFB in reno and see if they had been any planes in the area, within minutes the dispatcher said Stead reported no aircraft in our area.
Here's the kicker - withing 30 minute of contacting Stead I was ordered to abandon the case and let Plumas County continue the investigation. Who determined who had jurisdiction ? I never called in the location. To this day I would bet that Plumas County never completed the investigation. I'm 85 now and think I should have told someone.
