Can magnets force you to tell the truth ?

Estonian researchers claim that magnets can either force you to lie or make it impossible to do so.
A study was conducted in which magnets were placed at either the left or the right side of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, the result seemed to suggest that the individual was either unable to tell the truth or unable to lie depending on which side was stimulated.
The experiment involved giving 16 volunteers disks that varied in colour. Half were then given magnetic stimulation on the right side of their prefrontal cortex, half on the left.

TMS and rTMS (repetitive TMS) are in the experimental stage although there have been some clinical trials for things like migraine headaches. (Ummm ... curing them, not causing them. :-D ) Some doctors see them as quack or New Age medicine while otehrs see them as having a strong potential for being mainstream in the not too distant future. That said, I would need something more than an article in the DM to accept the claims being made.

*double face palm* I had great expectations from this article and was even gonna say something like "Magnets, how do they work?", but unfortunately this study is inconclusive and quite pathetic. Although the article was vague to say the least, if I understood it correctly, there were two experiments conducted of 12 and 16 volunteers (which had two parts). Both are really small sample sizes and so nothing can ever be concluded from something like that. Also, for the "first experiment" by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, they gave a scenario that "under normal conditions... [More]

"Can magnets force you to tell the truth?" No. Of course they can't.

*double face palm* I tried *fist to forehead* but that didn't seem to do much. I had great expectations from this article and was even gonna say something like "Magnets, how do they work?", but unfortunately this study is inconclusive and quite pathetic. Study? This doesn't even make a good parlor trick. TMS and rTMS are still experimental although a few trials have been made in specific areas but things like this are simply ludicrous. "Behavioural Brain Research" claims to be peer reviewed but if that's so I shudder to think about who those peers are. He is also making some extreme conclusion... [More]

Whew, that can't be healthy. Running magnets (electro?) all around your head, uh, no thanks.
