Neanderthals were separate species

A new, simplified family tree of humanity has dealt a blow to those who contend that the enigmatic hominids known as Neanderthals intermingled with our forebears. Neanderthals were a separate species to Homo sapiens, as anatomically modern humans are known, rather than offshoots of the same species, the new organigram published Sunday by the journal Nature declares.

I thought everyone already knew that Neanderthal's weren't Homo sapiens (which would make them a separate species).I am interested in any articles about human evolution though.

I searched: Neanderthal / DNA , and yes this subject put to rest a while back. Our most common ancestors DNA separated 250'000 to 300'000 years ago. Modern man emerged 150'000 years ago. Neanderthals died out 28'000 years ago with out mixing DNA with modern man.Or so I read.
