user posted image rA photograph, which has captured a dark figure taken in the foreboding underground Crypt at Oxford Castle Unlocked, has revealed the paranormal does exist and confirms beliefs that the Castle is haunted. The photograph was taken on Friday 16 May by a member of the public at a ghost hunt organised by Fright Nights, the UK's leading ghost hunt specialist.

The brave ghost hunter, who was alone in the Crypt at the time, took the photograph with his digital camera.

According to who? And the full article looks like a advertisement to get business.

"Dark Figure"? I see a nice medieval archway - but no dark figure in this photo...

I agree. I tried opening the picture, thinking there would be a close-up of the aparition. I see nothing.

This is how it works:

If a person believes in spirits/ghosts and really wants to see one, he is likely, at some point to witness that supernatural phenomenon of his preference.

If a person does not believe in said phenomenon and has no belief that he shall witness a thing pertaining to that mystery he will, in all likelihood, never see a shred of evidence concerning their existence.

Research into these questions appears very largely to depend on the 'faith' of the enquirer's thought/spirit process, that is why both sides remain unreconciled - because they literally are both correct by their own terms.

It looks like the photographers shadow, and yes a crafty advertisment for frightnights.

a photograph alone will never be able to 'prove' anything. There will always be suspicion of misidentification at best or hoax at worst by people who weren't there.

Reminds me of the dark figures on ghost hunters in the brewery and the lighthouse.

strange indeed, but if it were the photographers' shadow, keep in mind that the flash would have corrupted the image and/or eliminated it.

What? You can clearly see a outline of a figure right in the middle of the photo under the arch.

Ya, you guys that can't see it should adjust your monitor's brightness settings.

Well, this is really freaking...

For those who know Photoshop Shadow highlight feature, knows what I have done.

For those who don’t, shadow highlight let you adjust the shadow and highlights of the image.

In this image, I just opened it on the photoshop CS3 and removed the shadows of the image. Anyone can do this at home. You will get the dark figure at the center of the hallway.

The program does not consider it as shadow, thus not altering its appearance. It is bloody creepy. See below:

But would the flash just hit the walls to the entrance and bounce back? The figure does look like its actually in the middle of the walkway, not a shadow up against the back wall, well I hope it is a manifestation, I am open minded.

The outline of the figure is too perfect for that.

Ghosts are usually transparent figures, and 'a shadow person' is an usually and opaque figure.

What ever that thing is, its creepy! It is actually a bit transparent. If you get the image and zoom it, you can see some features of the wall behind it.

That is cool. Thank you! I loaded it into Microsoft Picture and played around with it and got the same thing. Creepy.

Did you guys read the full article?

Security guards have often felt uneasy patrolling the prison at night especially after a terrifying apparition was seen by a guard and his dog. The dog stopped in its tracks and growled whilst the guard saw two black figures in front of him. Days later the dog died, the cause of its death was believed to have been the fright caused by the apparition.

I wonder who concluded that...

I'm surprised the photographer didnt notice this until he got home and looked at the pix on the computer. Every ghost hunter I've worked with, and I myself, look at the image just taken on that little screen in the back of the camera after every shot. Thats one way we can tell if something is there or not since we usually cant see it with the naked eye. I would surely expect a "newbie" or "member of the public" who paid for the excitement of a ghost hunt to do that too wondering "did I get anything?!?" and then show it off.

Of course it's always possible he or she didnt look after each shot but that's impossible to say without talking to the photographer.

zooming in on it, the area around the head and shoulders area looks strange, more pixilated in 1 solid color than other areas of and around the body. I personally dont think this is an authentic photo of a shadow ghost as it appears to be but it is a cool picture none the less.

I don’t think pixel difference is a plausible explanation to any anomaly in this form, because this is not the original picture. It was taken from the site, which already provides a poorly and pixilated photo. Anyways. I think it was too dark to notice a “shadow form” in the little camera screen. Many ppl only noticed the figure after the shadow-highlighting applied to the picture.

I myself, have no idea what is that anyway, but sure its creepy. I wish I could get the high quality photo thought.

That's exactly what my first impression was upon viewing the photo. It looks like the sun was setting behind him and at the angle he was shooting and the flash, he captured a perfect image of his own shadow inside the crypt.

Some people jump to conclusions before considering all of the more likely possibilities...why? Because they need so badly to believe in their preexisting conclusions.
