Rules for time travelers

With the number of bizarre and often conflicting time travel plots that crop up in science fiction, Discover Magazine is taking a look at the premise of time travel and establishes a few ground rules - just how do you travel through time anyway ?
With the new Star Trek out, it’s long past time (as it were) that we laid out the rules for would-be fictional time-travelers. Not that we expect these rules to be obeyed; the dramatic demands of a work of fiction will always trump the desire to get things scientifically accurate, and Star Trek all by itself has foisted half a dozen mutually-inconsistent theories of time travel on us. 6. If something happened, it happened. Someone has been watching too much Lost... or not enough. And this is insane. Rules for how to write fiction? Rules?! Fictitious stories are about breaking the standards in order to create innovation. By abiding a set of arbitrary norms, the whole point of a good story is not only ruined, the story itself becomes dull and predictable. To Davy Jones with this, says I.

Rebel, you hit it right on the head. The older you get the faster time travels. When even bad days go by quickly you know you are getting old.

I also find it annoying when people try to create rules for something that has never been done.

Rules for time travel? Whats next rules for visiting neverland? 1. Don't grow up. 2. Wake up the pirate before you kill them. 3. Instead of kissing people, give them buttons.

Yes, it seems awfully constricting to try and stick time travel in a box and list ALL the ingredients of it, as if the world, including time, isn't constantly evolving and revealing new aspects of itself. After studying the Jane Robert's 'Seth' books, many years ago, and exploring my own universe, I think it is quite likely that you can change the past and affect the present.

Rebel, you hit it right on the head. The older you get the faster time travels. When even bad days go by quickly you know you are getting old. That must explain when they say, once you’re over the hill you begin to pick up speed... I guess at this moment in time i'm in cruise control.

My true beleife is that there is no such thing as time travle, however I think that phasing into another reality is what would happen. The constant of time can not be broken. But maybe entering another reality is more likley. IMO
