Japan tsunami 'could be 1000-year event'

Seismologists discover evidence of a similar tsunami that hit Sendai in 869 AD.
The devastation wraught by the disaster that hit Japan on March 11, 2011 has been nothing less than horrific, but evidence of a similar tsunami event in 869 AD has lead at least one seismologist to conclude that a tsunami of this size could happen on average once every one thousand years.
It is not unusual for undersea earthquakes to generate tsunamis in this part of Japan. Offshore quakes in the 19th and 20th centuries also caused large walls of water to hit this area of coastline. But previous research by a Japanese team shows that in the 869 "Jogan" disaster, tsunami waters moved some 4km inland, causing widespread flooding.

dazdillinjah - the concept of the 1 in 1000 year event simply means that there is a 0.1% chance of it happening in any given year. With the likelihood that it will happen once in a millenium. This means that it could happen three years in a row; but is very unlikely.

Ty ..I wish the reports that get broadcasted could be as specific and informative as how you have clarified it ..I do not mean to sound obtuse just very weary of experts predicting anything when they use totally vague language (prefer to be a realist)

Chances are, the expert described it as a '1 in a 1000 year event', which, as Ip21why pointed out, means probablility of 0.1% each year. The reporters will then think they understand the idea and take it to mean 'happens every 1000 years'. Statistically, they shoul... [More]

The bolded part lol ..is the stuff great drama's are made of .. 1.) define 'region' 2.) define 'may' ...1 + 2 = 3.) Its just a wild guess The region is obviously the region talked about in the article. And that is not anywhere near the Indian Ocean.

It's similar to when people say a certain event occurs every x amount of years; and then state 'we are overdue' for it - just hogwash really. Back on topic though; Northern Jap... [More]

Just wanted to point out the article says "that a tsunami of this size could happen on average once every one thousand years." "On Average" is the key phrase here.

it means that it's sure it will happen but we don't know when. Start to warn people in 1000 years later then.

Just wanted to point out the article says "that a tsunami of this size could happen on average once every one thousand years." "On Average" is the key phrase here. Just one thing - isn't this based on the recent tsunami and one in the 9th century? That's an average taken from two; it's virtually meaningless.
