Genetically modified soy: a new poison?

Paraguayan mother insists genetically modified soy killed her son, but does it really pose a danger ?
Growth of the "green gold" crop of genetically modified (GM) soy is quickly spreading throughout the land-locked South American country of Paraguay. GM soy's growth requires agrochemicals which are hazardous to people and animals living near the farms, yet the Paraguayan government has shown little effort in regulating the chemicals used.
In the last year the amount of land planted with soy has grown to a record 2. 6 million hectares, most of which is GM, leading to claims of deforestation, violent land disputes and the ‘poisoning’ of local communities.

GM crops are a really bad idea imho. It's supposed to increase the quality and yield of a harvest, but does the opposite. And I'm not convinced it's safe, either.

I don't know about America, but we have recently had talks in Australia about this and to me the most shocking thing is that the companies are the only people who test it, there is no governing body or independent testing done over here, all the results saying there is no long term harm are coming from the companies that sell it. I'd also like to see the evidence they've been feeding it to a test group since the 1960's, so we know for a fact there is no long term damage. (not gonna happen) Monsanto has been in the news over here a few times for alllll the wrong reasons. Organic farmed next to ... [More]

Monsanto, the food mafia. They will starve you or kill you and they control food so you better do what they say. Kindergarten crap but take a look. Chemical company all for you LOL Maybe we should start killing the real terrorists.

Monsanto should be charged with crimes against humanity, Monsanto is nothing more then a company designed to control food. They are a a terrorist organization sanctioned by whom?

Mbyte, regarding your question, "Does the GM soy need this perticular spray that organic soy doesn't?" As I understand it, the Genetically Modified seedlings are engineered to be immune from the specific sprays, but these sprays kill pretty well all other growths, be they weeds or non-GM crops. Beginning to see the hint of a problem there? The crops would not need to be resistant to pesticides. That makes no sense. Usually crops are made round-up resistant. Round-up could not kill anyone because we do not make cyclic amino acids.

Believe it or not, GM crops are rigorously tested before they enter the food chain; and any changes made are usually limited to increasing yield or hardiness. It isn't going to make zombie cornflakes that eat your children. Really? How would you know? If gm is so good, why do they need spraying? I heard gm made mice grow hair in their mouths & go sterile. Gm is very unneccessary & potentially very dangerous. Why do you push these lies?

Some GM crops are modified for reasons that don't have to do with their spraying. A lot of GM seed is to improve resistance to a disease. Sweet corn specifically has modified types for sugar content. Those types of GM tinkering wouldn't have anything to do with if a field is sprayed for insects or weeds. The article wasn't too clear about that.

Whatever argument is put forward, they are already polluting natural varieties, irreversibly, & the long term effects are unknown. This is environmental terrorism on a huge scale.

Whatever argument is put forward, they are already polluting natural varieties, irreversibly, & the long term effects are unknown. This is environmental terrorism on a huge scale. I'm not sure if all of it is environmental terrorism. I think the term terrorism implies a malicious forethought that isn't necessarily true in some GM instances. Maybe reckless negligence. But I do agree that we are polluting seed stock irreversibly, and we don't know all the long term effects. "True" GM hasn't been with us too long, though breeding modification has been around forever. Back to the article, it w... [More]
