How many intelligent aliens are out there ?

In the vastness of the cosmos are alien civilizations common or are they few and far between ?
In the 1960s astronomer Frank Drake devised an equation that he believed would provide an answer to this question, it uses a series of estimated values to come up with a likely number of contactable civilizations. Whether this equation is in any way accurate however remains to be seen - until we are able to map out every advanced civilization in the galaxy we will probably never know for sure.
In the 1960's, U. S. astronomer Frank Drake started the first real search for alien radio signals being beamed across the Universe. Off the back of this work, he came up with an equation that is at best, an educated stab at the number of civilizations in our Galaxy with which we might actually be able to communicate right now.

We've already covered this point. You think intelligence is just knowledge, I think it takes wisdom into account as well. And this still doesn't address the fact that we come up with increasingly nasty ways to kill each other. It just covers effeciency of the weapon. So you would not consider it an intelligent species if they fought among themselves.

No we don't!!! Your off-base yound lad. It was more nasty to kill with a sword. It was nastier yet to kill with a spear. Maybe burning at the stake is worse. People have been killing each other since their earliest years. Dogs kill rabbits. It is not unintelligent. If fact it is just the opposite. If the neighboring village is going to attack you, you better make a better weapon so that you can survive. Then why did we take guns that killed more or less instantly and make new ones designed to cause as much pain as possible? So you would not consider it an intelligent species if they fought amo... Then why did we take guns that killed more or less instantly and make new ones designed to cause as much pain as possible? You would have to have to ask the people who design guns. If you're talking about tasers and stun guns, I would guess that's because it's better to temporarily immobilize a dangerous person than permanently immobilize them. I didn't say that and never have. I would not consider them intelligent if they invented weapons designed to cause pain rather than be effective. Why? What's unintelligent about causing pain? If you don't want to kill somebody and they are trying to kil... [More]

Then why did we take guns that killed more or less instantly and make new ones designed to cause as much pain as possible? Can you elaborate? Guns have been made more efficient. Why are you obsessed with guns? Computers waste energy - Are we not intelligent because we created computers? I didn't say that and never have. I would not consider them intelligent if they invented weapons designed to cause pain rather than be effective.P.s. Please don't refer to me as 'young (or even yound) lad'. It's patronising and has no bearing on the discussion. Thanks. Fair enough.

It could be billions out there, even at 1 advanced per galaxy... but how many known? none. *(claims of abduction or other contact dont count as none of these have ever been proven therefore is unreliable in verifying alien life outside our planet or solar system IMO)

Even if there are billions of planets out there that can support our kind of life we may be in for quite a wait until we get a good image of said planet. It boils down to what our governments decide to do with your money. They seem hooked on Killing people at the moment. Maybe someday? Maybe.
