Doubt has been cast on where the asteroid that killed off the dinosaurs would have come from.
Up until now it was thought that the killer asteroid that smacked in to our planet 65 million years ago originated in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter and was part of a larger asteroid known as Baptistina which broke up when it collided with another asteroid 80 million years ago. New data however has suggested that there wasn't enough time for such an asteroid to have reached us by the time the extinction impact event took place.
Observations from NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mission indicate the family of asteroids some believed was responsible for the demise of the dinosaurs is not likely the culprit, keeping open the case on one of Earth's greatest mysteries.
