Walking through doorways makes you forget

Have you ever got up to do something, entered a room and forgotten what it was you were doing ?
According to scientists, this is not only common but a result of something called the "location-updating effect". When you walk in to a new room your brain will essentially refresh in order to take in your new location and surroundings, making you more likely to forget what it was you were doing when you came in.
Called "location-updating effect," the phenomenon also causes people transitioning between rooms (even virtual ones) to take more time while attempting to recall items from memory.

I remember this when it first came out. Pretty cool. You can even go back into the last room to recall what you left behind. I've often returned to a room the next day to perform some routine task and remember exactly what was playing on the radio. Back when I was involved in painting and drawing, I could recall what music was on as I retraced a brush stroke.

I like the fact that we as humans can construct items or structures that change the way our brain works. It can be used to our advantage. The environment does influence the mind and we can alter our environment. http://www.unexplained-mysteries.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=218115

I believe it. I have long avoided psychological barriers when deciding where to put a business. Someone can live minutes away but chose to go tens of minutes the other direction just because they have to go through a certain Interesection or change of scenery.

Funny how things like this are 'proven' by science, yet has been mentioned in books pertaining to dreams and astroplaning for eyars. Shows how much science doesn't know...

Thanks. This study is relifing to me. I used to go into room for something then I forget for what I came for. I never thought of that. Puts an interesting spin on this, doesn't it?

This topic was recently discussed in a science program in the UK. They believed this phenomena was a survival technique from our ancient ancestor so when going from one environment to another something like jungle to savannah, the mind can be fully aware for any new danger that the new environment might hold. It seems reasonable. There are many things we do that are instinctual. I am reminded of the science reports of time slowing down in accidents including sight/vision becoming black and white because it can process faster in this mode rather than process colour vision, possibly giving milli... http://www.eurekaler...d-wtd111811.php "Entering or exiting through a doorway serves as an 'event boundary' in the mind, which separates episodes of activity and files them away," Radvansky explains. that explains a lot for me.....lots of doorways where I work....I can blame my brain farts on them. Good to have something to blame instead of me doug

Its amazing the way the brain works and set triggers as far as memory recall and just all out forgetting things
