A leaked document suggests Russia is planning on embarking on a manned mission to the Moon.

The document details plans to "conduct a demonstrative manned circumlunar test flight with the subsequent landing of cosmonauts on [the Moon’s] surface and their return to Earth" with a deadline of 2030. In the early days of the original space race, Russia look set to beat the US to the Moon when it became the first nation to put a man in space and to launch a satellite. Now, several decades on, can Russia finally fullfil its ambition to put a man on the Moon ?

Plans to send cosmonauts to the Moon could help revive Russia’s space programme after a troubled period. A series of satellites crashed last year and in January the Mars probe, Fobos Grunt, fell to Earth after a faulty launch two months earlier.
